July 11th- Pitta Out of Whack? Summer Ayurveda Tips
|
Summertime is officially upon us and as unpredictable as the weather has been, it is warming up! As July progresses into August we are bound to have some of those 90+ degree days that might make us feel a little bit prickly or wilted. You can be ready to respond and keep your cool!
Summer is the time of Pitta, the qualities of which are hot, sharp, pungent, intense etc.-- they're just begging to be cooled! In Leslie's classes we will return to some Ayurveda study, exploring ways to keep your pitta calm as the weather heats up. She'll be teaching some cooling pranayama (breath work) and ways to adjust your practice to balance Pitta, which governs digestion, and in the grand scheme of things is very much about transformation.
From that digestion perspective, the food you choose can make a big impact on whether your potentially transformative fire burns you out or truly supports you in creating positive change. To balance heat, look to ingredients like cucumber, sweet fruits, mint, unfermented dairy products, as well as cooling seasonings such as cilantro, coriander and fennel when creating your meals.
This recipe for Mung Dal, Coconut and Cilantro Kitchari is a wonderful meal option to reduce Pitta. The coconut milk and cilantro are especially calming to the digestive system and cool on the palate. Bon appetit!
And speaking of Ayurveda, we have a very special class coming up!
Friday, August 10th from 6-9 pm, Ann Wagoner, an Ayurvedic practitioner here in Portland will be here to share more about how to bring Ayurvedic knowledge in to support your lifestyle.
