May 16th- Got Back Pain? Get to Yoga.
|
We're all aware that low back pain is among the most prevalent ailments in our culture. How many people do you know who see a specialist or take medication for debilitating pain in the lumbar region? The amount of time we spend sitting at work, driving our cars, and elsewhere in our daily lives greatly contributes to this. Though sitting in chairs is something we might associate with relaxation and "taking a load off", it actually tends to make the lower body more tense than it needs to be in some areas, while allowing other key postural muscles to become weak.
But the good news is, yoga is one of the best therapies you can give yourself to stretch and strengthen the back body, including the hamstrings, which also frequently play a role in low back pain. Check out this recent study we came across, performed by some local Northwest physicians, which supports the practice of yoga for back pain relief.
You'll have an opportunity to learn even more about this area of the body, including asana for pain relief and prevention of injury, in Leslie's next Therapeutic Focus workshop happening on Sunday, May 27th from 12-2pm. We hope you can make it-- and your back will thank you, too.
