May 9 - Ayurvedic Spring Cleansing

We've been mentioning spring quite a bit lately, but that's only because it's so important to recognize the impact that the four seasons have on our habits, rhythms and general state of wellness. In some of our classes we've been working with Ayurveda, specifically focusing on spring's wet, damp kaphic qualities. We've been taking a look at ways to balance these qualities in ourselves and to calm the effects of spring allergies and other illnesses through breath, movement and nutrition.

In Indian cultures, people commonly eat a food called kitchari (pronounced kit-chur-ree), which literally means "mixture", to re-balance their doshas. Similar to a big vegetable stew with many potent spices, kitchari is a tonic that improves digestive fire, helping us to cleanse the internal organs, which in turn helps us to feel a bit lighter. It's also the perfect nutritional accompaniment to panchakarma, a series of Ayurvedic treatments that encourage the body to release toxins.

Kitchari can be made with a variety of different ingredients--it's more a category of food rather than a specific dish. We like this kitchari recipe from the Ayurvedic Rejuvenation Center in Seattle because it offers some ingredient suggestions for the balancing of all doshas, no matter which season we're in!
