September 6, 2011 When Things Go Wrong
When things go wrong, don't go wrong with them.
How quick we are to react to the circumstances around us. Does one cross word make our day a complete loss? How do we react when faced with a long line at the gas pump, an insolent waiter, a sullen teenager, slow moving traffic, a pessimistic coworker, etc.?
Are we a thermometer or a thermostat?
A thermometer reflects the surroundings and reacts to circumstances.
A thermostat sets the expectations and controls the environment.
I think God would want us to be like the thermostat and have a significant influence on what is going on around us.
I believe that God wants us as Christians to be a positive force in our culture and to have a significant impact on those within our circle of influence.
As a Christian in the workplace we can make a positive difference if we are willing to follow God's leading. In our homes we need to set the tone for the rest of the family and be the one who encourages open communication and reasonable solutions.
The Bible says:
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1
Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself. Proverbs 26:4
And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:13
So, when things go wrong - and I can guarantee that they will -
don't go wrong with them.
We should - and can - be the voice of reason and the salt that gives flavor and goodness to our existence.
