On a Journey

I read recently that 1 out of every 6 people silently struggles with addiction; that over 50 million people in our country are addicts.  Addictions include alcohol, drugs, gambling, improper sex, eating disorders, and so on.

That means that every other household on your street is touched by addiction.

Being trapped in an addiction is like being trapped in a small raft on a fast-flowing river.  But it isn't hopeless.  Rescues are possible.  The journey doesn't have to end in disaster.

2 Corinthians 4:16-5:1 - Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

This is a serious subject and demands persistence and our utmost attention.  The path of addiction leads to destruction; not only physical, but mental, emotional and spiritual destruction.  The first step is to CHOOSE TO CHANGE.   Once that decision is made, the journey begins. The next thing is to realize that you can't do it alone. There is strength in the presence of the Lord. There are many people and programs to help along the way if we are willing to ask for help. Let me point to some thoughts to encourage you today.

2 Corinthians 12:9 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

There is a miracle that happens when we leave our burdens at the foot of the cross and begin the journey with Him.  God views us through the saving grace of Jesus.  God looks at us through the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Not that we have attained but that our hope is in the Lord.

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:12-14

If you are standing beside the person making the journey back, you have the responsibility to pray diligently for them, listen to them, encourage them and walk with them.

Along the journey,
