MUSEUMS ADVOCACY DAY 2009
By Jenny Hankinson, CWAM Chair

On February 23 & 24, 2009, I joined over 300 museum professionals, volunteers, and trustees from across the country in a coordinated effort to educate our elected officials in Washington DC, about the value of museums. Many attempts had been made in the past 20 years to organize an Advocacy Day, but the timing was right, with a new President and other elected officials (and their staffs), and the need to re-authorize IMLS. Also part of the agenda was the discussion about nonprofit tax-exempt status and education policy, including the impact of No Child Left Behind on museums.

The CWAM Board of Directors felt it was important for us to send a spokesperson, because our two states do need representation. With only two people from Wyoming in attendance, and under 10 from Colorado, museums from larger cities and the coasts made up the majority of attendees. Having other organizations communicating for us doesn't always translate well for our area and our needs, but this congregation allowed for unprecedented camaraderie with other museum associations and professionals. It was time for us to come together and speak with one voice on a common agenda, but to do so with our own experiences and needs in mind.

In the weeks just before Museums Advocacy Day, we saw many of our elected officials lumping museums and other cultural organizations along with casinos, golf courses and swimming pools into language for amendments to the national economic stimulus package. We all know that there is no comparison between museums and casinos (and the like), but for some reason, there are people out there - including those in government - who do. They see us as luxuries or "fluff". Because of this, another reason for Museums Advocacy Day was simply to educate our legislators about the value of museums and cultural organizations, and how they contribute more to our economies than people may know.

Advocacy is not just for lobbyists, large manufacturers or other for-profit industries. We are all advocates already - we advocate for our museums every day. Just as it is our right as citizens to vote, it is just as important to communicate with officials once they take office. Museums and cultural institutions are part of a cultural industry, and can (and should) vie for attention and funding. In addition to an economic stimulus package, we need to fight for what I like to call a "cultural stimulus package" - a concerted effort by all of us to fight for what defines us as a culture, from NASCAR to museum exhibits and programming. One simple way to start this is to invite your elected officials into your museums, include them on your boards, and send them your membership newsletters. They need to know what is going on in their communities in order to represent them accurately!

CWAM's membership is the most diverse and invested group of people I've ever met, and I encourage you to join a national endeavor to participate in actively advocating for yourselves, for your museums, your peers, and for your communities. Look for more programming and information on advocacy from CWAM in the future, and in the meantime, please use AAM's advocacy site, www.speakupformuseums.org for more information on Museums Advocacy Day and the national advocacy movement.

2009 CWAM Annual Conference
May 7-10, 2009
Estes Park, Colorado

"Agents of Change" Coming to the 2009 CWAM Annual Meeting
by Christina Shepard, Program Chair

It has been a very busy couple of months for the Program Committee getting things together for the Annual Meeting in Estes Park.  We are pleased to announce that we have all of our session slots filled.  The theme "Agents of Change" has elicited a wide variety of session topics and there will be something for everyone.  We are also excited about the subject of this year's plenary session: Creating Audience Diversity.  Betsy Martinson is putting together a top-notch panel for the discussion.  Don't forget that Peter Hassrick of the Denver Art Museum will be giving the keynote address.  He will be talking about how he has worked to change perceptions of Western Art and changes that museums have gone through during his decades-long career.  You will find more information in your preliminary programs. Be sure to look for them in the mail this month and get your registrations in early!  We hope that everyone will be able to attend the meeting and those that do will leave with new skills and tools to help them become an agent of change in their own institutions.  See you in Estes Park!

Scholarships
by Fay Bisbee

This year the Colorado-Wyoming Association of Museums will award up to eight Annual Meeting scholarships under the categories of Professional, Volunteer, Student/Intern, and New Member.  Each scholarship recipient will receive a registration fee waiver plus a cash grant of $200 to help offset expenses (a total value of $325).  The deadline for applications is March 27, 2009.

Applicants are required to submit a letter from their institution's director, board member, or other supervisory authority (such as a faculty advisor) and a brief essay explaining how they will benefit from attending the meeting and how they will apply what they learn at the meeting at their institution.

Scholarship recipients are expected to attend the opening session of the annual meeting as well as the business lunch, during which they will be recognized.  Recipients are also required to write a short artilce for the CWAM newsletter, covering a session they attended at the annual meeting.  Preference is given to applicants who have not previously received a scholarship.  Details and the scholarship application form can be found at www.coloradomuseums.org or www.wyomingmuseums.org or in the Annual Meeting Packet.  For questions please contact Fay Bisbee at fbisbee@wildlifeart.org.
Silent Auction
by Michelle Bahe

The CWAM Auction at the Annual Meeting in Sheridan was a great success and oodles of fun.   The objects donated to be auctioned off included everything from museum mugs, Hollinger boxes, sunbonnets, jewelry, books, and flamingo stuff.  We are a very creative bunch and it shows at the auction.

The proceeds of the CWAM Auction are used for the scholarships at the following year's Annual Meeting.  Meaning the more we spend, the more scholarships we can offer.  We made $2,598.58 in Sheridan so we are offering 8 scholarships this year in Estes Park.  Let's see if we can't out-do last year's amazing total.

Everybody start thinking about what they are going to contribute to this year's Auction and that includes the cash to buy the wonderful and wacky items.

Stephanie Wood
Stephanie Wood has worked in the museum field for 14 years.  Currently, she is a freelance project manager for museums, working with the Children's Museum of Denver on a master plan for their facility and exhibits.  She was the Local Conference Coordinator for the American Association of Museums 2008 Annual Meeting.  Previously, she was Exhibitions Coordinatory (3 years), Manager of Visitor Services (7 years) and Project Manager (3 years) at the Denver Art Museum.  She has been active in AAM as a presenter in the Marketplace of Ideas and is a member of the Museum Management Committee SPC and Visitor Services PIC.  She represented DAM on the DMCVB Cultural Tourism Committee.

Wyoming-At-Large: 1 position available

Michelle Bahe
I have been on the CWAM board since 2001.  I remember my first board meeting; it was in Sterling, CO and in the middle of the meeting the tornado sirens went off and we relocated the meeting to the gym at one of the elementary schools in town.  We went right on with the meeting.  As a girl who grew up in Minnesota it was just like being back home.  I came out to Colorado for graduate school at the University of Denver and fell in love with the region.  I have worked at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum, and the Aurora History Museum.  I am currently working at the Fort Caspar Museum in windy Wyoming.
I'm currently the CWAM Treasurer.  I had been asked to fill this position two years ago when the previous Treasurer took a job outside of the museum field.  I feel like I'm just getting the hang of the job.  I enjoy the position, it can be a challenge sometimes, keeping everything straight as the Annual Meeting grows closer but it is fun to see everything come together and everybody having a good time at the Annual Meeting.  I look forward to continuing to serve you.

We are currently looking for a Program Committee Chair for the 2010 Annual Meeting!  Please let a board member know if you or anyone you know is interested in filling this position!

The CWAM/MPMA Co-op price is $20.98- a savings of 82%.  And that price includes shipping!
For those of you who are wondering why your preferred individual items do not show up on the list, we wanted to offer an explanation.  Although many of you requested Tyvek, we did not receive a single bid for this product.  For those who requested items specified in the first or second round of commitment forms, we did not request bids for less than five items or packages committed to, (as a total commitment from all members) as this is often the minimum needed to obtain any kind of discount.

However, there is no need to deprive yourself of a discount on these items.  Gaylord is offering us a 20% discount on any item in their archival catalog and this includes shipping.  Conservation Resources is offering us a 10% discount on top of their lowest price (the one offered for the largest quantities) for any item in their catalog.  Shipping is additional for this discount.  Remember, you must be an institutional member of CWAM to obtain these deep discounts.  Happy shopping!

"Now, we have combined our skills at design with our expertise in archival materials to develop products for the public areas of galleries and museums. With this move, we can offer our customers a complete selection of items they need to design and install their exhibits."

Gaylord The Metro™Series Exhibit Cases are built with special attention paid to environmental controls and security. Each of the five different styles of The Metro Series cases is appropriate for long-term display and even traveling exhibits.

Gaylord Crystal Cubes™ Exhibit Cases feature a simple design that directs attention to objects on display. The Crystal Cubes Case is available with standard or UV filtering acrylic in freestanding and tabletop styles.

Gaylord Joele™ Exhibit Cases provide an unobstructed view of objects while they're on display. The Joele Case is available with either standard or UV filtering acrylic.

Gaylord Custom Museum Quality Cases and Pedestals enable curators to design an exhibit to perfectly group and support all objects on view.

Gaylord's exhibit solutions also include acrylic risers, easels and artifact displayers, fabrics, book cradles, installation systems, hardware and signage. Three styles of wall track systems are the most recent addition to Gaylord's line of exhibit products.

Colorado Humanities will sponsor a 2010-11 Colorado tour of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street exhibition Between Fences.  Colorado Humanities invites applications from historical societies and museums, libraries, or other institutions with the requisite resources for hosting the exhibit.  The exhibition encourages visitors to examine the significance of fences as a crucial aspect of their personal and national heritage. Fences, like barns and other structures, are tools that embody a culture and its values. By understanding both historic and contemporary fences, visitors will gain a better understanding about themselves as Americans. In addition to objects and images relating to the exhibition stories, fence materials include tools, photographs, and publications including product literature, journals, postcards, and posters.

Between Fences is available to 4-6 Colorado museums for 6-week bookings beginning in September of 2010.  Host institutions will receive assistance from Colorado Humanities in developing capacity to support this exhibit and to create and implement their own programs and exhibits focused on local content. This exhibition was developed especially for small institutions and rural audiences that typically do not have access to traveling exhibits. For more information or to apply please contact Josephine Jones, Director of Programs at Colorado Humanities at 303-894-7951 x15 or jones@coloradohumanities.org

The Hayden Heritage Museum in Hayden, Colorado is going from a 'one-horse' operation to a TEAM!  The Board of Directors recently hired Amanda Dowling as a part-time assistant to Curator Mary Pat Dunn.  Amanda previously has worked as a summer docent for the museum, and will bring her passion for local history to this new position.

The Jefferson County Historical Society has received a $1,000 grant from Colorado Humanities to assist in its photo preservation and digitization project.  The Society's collection, housed at Hiwan Homestead Museum in Evergreen, Colorado, includes some 4,000 historic images from Jefferson County and the surrounding area.  The collection is in need of reorganization after 35 years of use by researchers.  The grant from Colorado Humanities will be matched by the Historical Society, and the funding will be used to hire a contract worker to reorganize the collection and ready it for digitization.  Then the second part of the project will involve scanning and digitizing the collection to make researching in the collection much more user-friendly, and to preserve the images.  The reorganization of the photo collection will proceed through the spring and summer of 2009.
