Our Twenty-Seventh Presentation of the Big Sur International Marathon and related events was a great success, from the start of the Expo on Friday to the finish on Sunday at Highway One and Rio Road. Although the "slide area" will present logistical challenges for at least another two years, we were pleased that our runners were able to complete the point-to-point course from Big Sur to Carmel...although Mother Nature did throw in a serious headwind between miles 6 and 20.

Record crowds showed up to participate in the Marathon, the Runner's World Challenge, the Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge and numerous other events.  Saturday's JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K drew over 3,500 kids and their families and friends for the Pacific Grove event.  Twenty Monterey County schools earned cash prizes for their participation in this event.

A busy summer lies ahead for us.  Preparations for November's Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay are well under way and we're getting ready to open registration for our 2013 Big Sur Marathon events, which will be held the last weekend in April.

Big Sur Merchandise

2013 Registration

Registration for the marathon and related events will open on July 15, 2012 at 7:00 AM Pacific time.  Last year we sold out in 29 days...we expect this year to go even faster.  Registration for the Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge presented by ASICS will open on September 22, the day after Boston registration closes.  You don't need to register in July for the marathon if you are planning on running B2B.  For more details on B2B, click HERE.

Runner's World Challenge

We are proud to announce that our partnership with the Runner's World Challenge will be extending to our 2013 marathon!  The RWC offers runners a training plan designed by Bart Yasso and the editors of Runner's World with weekly emails explaining the workouts for the week ahead. In addition, all challengers receive VIP treatment race weekend that includes a heated tent and dedicated porta-potties at the start, a catered VIP ent at the finish with free post-race massages, reduced rates at the RWC host hotel, a technical t-shirt with the RWC logo and much more.  More details coming soon HERE.

Trash No More! 

Our focus on greening continued strongly at this year's marathon.  New initiatives included a shoe recycling station, courtesy of Sports Basement, and better post-race sorting efforts.  This year's waste diversion was an unprecedented 94.86%, continuing our record as one of the country's greenest marathons!

Runner's World Plans Own Half Marathon

The weekend of October 20 and 21 Runner¹s World will be hosting its first-ever Half-Marathon and Running Festival in historic, and beautiful, Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Bananas a Favorite Source of Energy for Athletes 

As recently reported in Science Daily.com, a new study has found that bananas are as beneficial as sports drinks and offer additional advantages.  Research conducted with cyclists at Appalachian State University's Human Performance Lab in North Carolina has revealed that bananas provide not only antioxidants, but a great nutritional boost, including fiber, potassium and Vitamin B6.  In addition, bananas have a healthier blend of sugars than sports drinks.  The study, funded by Dole Foods, has been published in the peer-reviewed online journal PLoS ONE published by the nonprofit Public Library of Science.

Ventana Vineyard Announcements
