Greetings!
Our November Half Marathon on Monterey Bay was once more a huge success! The predicted inclement weather never materialized, and race conditions were near perfect. The elite race lived up to the promised close finish and we congratulate winners Sisay Ezkysas and Magdalena Boulet! The inaugural Pacific Grove LIghthouse 5K featured a near sell-out crowd with praises for the new scenic and fast course. A big thanks to our sponsor Rabobank and to the city of Pacific Grove.
With the Mud Run only 2 months away and the April marathon events in 3 months, we are working hard to ensure the success of these events as well. We are happy to be returning to our traditional point-to-point Big Sur to Carmel course for the marathon and are in the process of fine tuning the logistics.
We hope you enjoy this edition of "On the Run."
Lt. Col. Wally Kastner, USMC (Ret) Race Director

Half Marathon "Greening" Update
We are proud to announce that our Half Marathon has once again earned Gold Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport. Earning all 36 CRS Certification credits applied for, we are the only event to achieve Gold CRS Certification in 2011. More Half Marathon News
The Big Sur Half was recently voted "Best Half Marathon" in Competitor Magazine's "best of" contest featured in their January 2012 issue. Thank you to all who voted for us! And....mark your calendars. Registration for the November 18, 2012 event will open on April 1, 2012 at 7:00 AM Pacific time.
Recent Runner's World Survey
The December issue of Runner's World magazine included an interesting survey of their readers. The destination marathon of choice was none other than the Big Sur International Marathon at 25%, and we even beat the Paris Marathon! The favorite shoe brand was our sponsor ASICS at 42%. And we especially liked the statistic that 99% of respondents intend to "run for a lifetime."
Big Sur's Mud Run
Registration for the 7th annual Big Sur Mud Run is now open and the event is about 65% full! We've expanded the field to 3,000...1,500 individual runners and 300 5-person teams. The day to get "down and dirty" will be Saturday, March 24. The approximate 5-mile course features walls, obstacles, drill sargeants, dirt, sand, water, and four mud pits. JUST RUN Update |
The Big Sur Marathon's youth fitness program JUST RUN is continuing to impact the lives of thousands of children. Approximately 7,000 children are already enrolled this year and we are expecting to surpass last year's impressive number of 315,000 miles logged by our enthusiastic participants! Statistics have shown that the JUST RUN schools not only score higher on fitness tests but on standardized academic tests, as well.
All schools and youth organizations in any locale are invited to participate in our FREE program. It is website-based and turnkey, making it easy for leaders and teachers to understand and to implement. JUST RUN is multifaceted: it not only promotes exercise and the sport of running, but good citizenship, healthy eating and pride in accomplishment.
We are looking forward to hosting approximately 3,500 local kids and their families at our next JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K to be held the day prior to the marathon in April. To assist schools in funding their physical activity programs, a total of $16,000 will be awarded to our winning schools, based on participation.
