The Big Sur International Marathon
Keeping in Touch for 2011
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
It has been nearly two weeks since the slide just north of Bixby Bridge caused the collapse and subsequent closure of Highway One. We will be sending out regular eblasts prior to this year's race as a means of keeping you updated on the many changes occuring as a result of the course change. Again, we thank you for your ongoing support and we are working around the clock to provide you with a world-class, scenic and challenging event.
Course Information Update (as of March 31)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rocky Creek Bridge

  • The out-and-back course change will effect the Marathon, 21-Miler and Marathon Relay.  The 10.6-Miler, 9-Miler and 5K course remain the same.
  • Start times for some events have changed. The 10.6-Miler will begin at 6:30 AM from Rocky Point Restaurant.  The Marathon, 21-Miler, Relay and 9-Miler will start at 6:45 AM from Highway One near Rio Road.  The 5K will begin at 7:45 AM.
  • Participants for ALL EVENTS but the 5K will be bused to the start of their event from locations in Monterey, Seaside and Carmel.  This is necessary due to extreme parking congestion at the start area.  Bus departure locations will be given in the Race Weekend Instructions and will be posted on the website when ready.  You will need to pick up a free bus pass at the Health & Fitness Expo during race weekend.  There will be free parking at the bus departure locations.
  • Post-race shuttles will return finishers to the location they departed from earlier that morning.
  • We are still in the process of determining aid station locations and Relay exchange points.  This information will also be on the website and in the Race Weekend instructions once finalized.
  • Caltrans has indicated that there is a high likelihood that the road will not be open by race weekend between Carmel and Big Sur. This will impact those with reservations at a Big Sur property.  We are strongly recommending that you make alternative reservations on the Monterey Peninsula.  Please visit our travel page at www.bsim.org.  You can also call the Carmel Chamber at 831.624.2522 or the Pacific Grove Chamber at 831.373.3304.  Also check our online booking link that provides information and online reservations to ALL properties on the Monterey Peninsula by clicking HERE.

The road collapse on Highway One just south of Rocky Creek Bridge that precipitated the road closure.  You really don't want to be running through this area on race day!
