Greetings!
A very sucessful 2010 has come and gone, and now we are ramping up for our 2011 Mud Run, Big Sur Marathon events and the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay. As always, our goal is to continue to raise the bar and produce world-class running events while giving back to our local community.
We hope you enjoy this edition of "On the Run." |
A Message from the Race Director |
Looking Forward
2010 was the occasion of our 25th Big Sur Marathon and we brought lots of new things to the table - 26 larger than life mile markers on the Marathon course, a new post-race party, and the Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge. Race weekend brought great weather, record numbers and glowing feedback from our participants. And then the question arose...what can we do next?
We have been named one of the top three marathons in the country behind Boston and New York, as well as the nation's Best Destination Marathon. Our goal is to continue to live up to this reputation and to do better wherever possible. We are honored to have been chosen in 2011 by Runner's World for their Runner's World Challenge, and we are in the second year of our very successful Boston 2 Big Sur event.
Our early sell-out is indicative of the popularity of our events. We thank you for choosing Big Sur and we promise to deliver to you the race experience of a lifetime. Wally Kastner Race Director |

His Vice-Chair, Dr. Wayne Richey, then stepped up to the Chairman position. Reach Our Runners |
To businesses looking to reach the affluent, educated running market, the Big Sur Marathon is offering several opportunites for exposure in the upcoming 2011 event. - The Monterey County Herald is once again publishing our Official Souvenir Program. In addition to be placed in the hands of all our participants, the program will be distributed to 10,000 households on the Monterey Peninsula (total of 21,000 to be printed). Advertising in the program is a great vehicle for exposure and to put forth special offers during race weekend.
- The Virtual Goodie Bag (VGB) continues to get bigger and better. This year's digital race bag will include games, runner podcasts and other online gifts in addition to special offers from sponsors and local retailers. Spots in the VGB come as low as $250. To learn more and upload your offer, click HERE.
- The 2011 Health & Fitness Expo is nearly sold out. Exhibitors will feature running shoes, apparel and gear, along with other race promotions, free sampling and educational exhibits and demonstrations. More than 20,000 are expected to pass through the two-day Expo.

JUST RUN News |
Starting Strong in 2010 - 2011
The Big Sur Marathon's youth fitness program JUST RUN is experiencing a very successful 2010 - 2011 school year. Over 5,000 children have already logged 106,000 miles and both numbers continue to rise. Additionally, the Lake County Health Department was recently welcomed as the program's fifth licensee and will implement and oversee the JUST RUN program in NE Ohio.
New Partners
Recognized as a vehicle to further their causes, JUST RUN was invited to partner with two national organizations: the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the President's Challenge, the premier program of the President's council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. "It's an honor to be recognized by these national organizations," said JUST RUN founder Mike Dove. "We received a Gold Medal from Governor's (Schwarzenegger) Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in and these new affiliations continue to bring greater recognition to JUST RUN." "Ours is a free, website-based program that can be easily adopted by any school or youth organization in any locale," adds JUST RUN administrator Susan Love. "We are confident that the exposure afforded by these two national programs will encourage more schools throughout the country to participate, as they learn how easy it is to administer and to implement."

Sponsor News |
In October 2010 we moved into our plush new offices at The Barnyard Shopping Village, very close by the Marathon finish area. The expansive new space allows us to host meetings and clients, organize merchandise for easier handling and shipping, and showcase our events through beautiful photography and years and race posters.
Built in Carmel in 1976, the Barnyard Shopping Village is a landmark on the Monterey Peninsula featuring more than 45 merchants, ranging from couture fashion shops and international restaurants to professional services and galleries. The Barnyard hosts annual property events within its colorfully landscaped brick lined courtyards, and with the addition of the Big Sur Marathon and another new tenant, Bay Bikes, the center will soon be home to monthly runs and bike rides.
The Barnyard Shopping Village is owned and operated by SIMA Barnyard, LLC, a California-based company. |
