Issue: #7Summer 2010
Greetings!
We opened registration for the Big Sur Marathon and related events on July 15th, signing up over 1,000 people in the first 24 hours!  We're looking forward to another banner year and hope you'll join us on May 1, 2011.

We hope you enjoy this edition of "On the Run."
A Message from the Race Director
Wally Kastner head shot Riding the Wave
2010 has proven to be a milestone year for our non-profit organization.  We started off with an incredible honor, being named one of the nation's top three marathons by the editors of Runner's World magazine, and as the "best destination marathon" by its readers.  We celebrated the 25th Presentation of the Big Sur International Marathon by debuting our new "larger than life" mile markers, holding a fabulous post-race party and rolling out the inaugural Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge. Perfect weather on race day was coupled with a record number of finishers in the marathon and our first ever Monterey County male winner, Daniel Tapia.

We recently received Gold Certification for our greening program thanks to the dedication and hard work of many race volunteers and environmental organizations (see story below).  For our upcoming November Half Marathon, we're ahead of schedule with race registrations and are hoping for a sellout by September.

Life is good.  We thank you for giving us a a 97% approval rating for our course and volunteers this past April.  We're riding a wave that we hope continues long into the future.  We thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and participants for the contributions, hard work and support that underlie our continuing success.

Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay
We're approaching the halfway mark in registrations with only a few months to go!  We've increased the field to 7,500 this year following the elimination of the 10-Mile Walk (both runners and walkers welcome in the Half).  We.will again focus on wave starts to eliminate crowding on the course.

Big Sur International Marathon
Registration for our 26th Presentation opened on July 15 with 20% of the marathon slots sold out after just two days!  Our Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge is continues to be a popular choice for the "hard core" athlete.  This year's marathon will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2001 marking the first time ever the event has not been held on the last Sunday in April (due to Easter Sunday).  The traditional April date will return in 2012.

Big Sur's Mud Run

It's muddy business as usual for the Big Sur Mud Run.  Registration opens November 1, 2010 for the March 26, 2011 event. We hope to increase the field for the Fourth Presentation due to last year's sell-out.

Sponsor Updates & News
Here's what some of our sponsors are up to...
  • Treadmill, our area's premier running store, is expanding its "minimal shoe" wall with the addition of new minimal footwear from Nike, Saucony, Asics and others to add to its full line of Vibram Five Fingers.  When running with minimal shoes, you use the ball of your foot, the arch, ankle, knee and hip to absorb the impact and redirect the energy as nature intended.
  • GU Energy Labs has developed the GU Pure Performance Sampler which includes 9 Energy Gels, 3 Roctane Gels, 2 Chomps packets, 2 Electrolyte Brew packets, and 1 Recovery Brew packet.  Now you can test drive the full GU lineup and see how a nutrition system can help you go farther and finish stronger.
  • Rabobank, our Half Marathon sponsor, is "safe, sound, secure and growing!" There are currently 93 branches in California another four should be opening by the year's end.  Rabobank, N.A. is part of the Rabobank Group, one of the safest banks in the world with a 110-year history of trustworthy service.

Going Green
Big Sur Gets Gold for Green
Gold Certification logoWe've won again!  Mirroring the November Half Marathon event, the April Marathon was granted Gold Certification for the success of its greening programs.  Called "one of the most progressive events in the country" by the Council for Responsible Sport, the Big Sur Marathon focused on zero waste efforts and boasted less than .12 pounds of trash per participant.  Additional initiatives undertaken included 100% online race registration, the creation of an online Results Book, 'virtual' goodie bags for race participants, solar power to provide energy generation at the race finish, a BYOB - Bring Your Own (Water) Bottle - program to help reduce the number of cups on the course, and shuttles to transport runners to the various distance events on race day.  Carbon offsets were also purchased and redirected to Native Energy projects in California.

The greening was accomplished via a coordinated, cooperative effort between agencies including Athletes for a Fit Planet, Ecology Action, The Offset Project, the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD) and Waste Management.

"We couldn't have achieved the Gold Certification without the involvement of so many dedicated organizations and individuals," stated Karen Ferlito, Chair of the Big Sur Marathon's Green Team.  Ferlito cites a core group of approximately 50 volunteers who worked on the greening of the event, plus dozens of others that assisted during race weekend.
