Issue: #6 January 2010
Greetings!
Hard to believe that 2010 is here already! We are ramping up for our 25th presentation, following a banner year in 2009.  The 5th annual Big Sur Mud Run is just around the corner, and our JUST RUN youth fitness program is growing by leaps and bounds.  We look forward to raising the bar even higher in 2010, and thank our extended "Big Sur family" for your involvement and support.

A Message from the Race Director
Wally Kastner head shot The Excitement Builds!
As many of your prepare for your journey to a Big Sur Marathon event, I realize it's time to get serious about my own training for Boston 2 Big Sur (I'll actually be doing Big Sur 2 Boston).  I'm motivated about the challenge and the linking of two great marathons. We will have our booth in the International Section of the Boston Marathon Expo and hope to have a first edition book from Runner's World to hand out to B2B runners. I'm also excited about our new mile markers, which will provide an entertaining on-course diversion for our runners. My children, Will and Hannah, were delighted to serve as the models for the mile 22 marker (see the article below).

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in April as we continue to provide one of the best running experiences on the planet!
Wally Kastner
Race Director

Marathon Sell-out!
The new year started with an early sell-out of the Marathon on January 3, our earliest sell-out in over five years.  Due to a huge demand from runners who didn't get in, we opened an additional 200 spots at $250 each, with the difference made as a donation to our JUST RUN program.  These slots sold out in less than a week, bringing a sizeable donation to the marathon's youth fitness effort. A Big Thumbs Up from Runner's World

New Mile Markers Nearing Completion
Whimsical Mile Markers Mile 22Debut Soon
The creation of 29 larger than life mile markers that began last summer is nearing fruition. Sponsored by both national and local businesses and individuals, the 7 foot tall mile markers are designed to motivate, inspire and amuse both runners and walkers along their journey from Big Sur to Carmel.  Models were choosen mostly from the local running community and range from an Olympian marathoner to the race director's children, as depicted in the photo. Be sure to bring a camera on the course race day, and also take note of your favorite mile for an upcoming contest.

Stay tuned for photos and the story behind each mile marker to be featured in the Special Interest section of the BSIM website in February.

Going Green
ReSport GoldGoing for the Gold...and Winning!
We're excited to announce that the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay has achieved Gold Certification for its innovative and operational efforts towards greening our fall event.  The certification was awarded by the Council for Responsible Sport, a Portland, Oregon-based non-profit organization focus on raising the level of environmental and social responsibility in sporting events.

A dedicated committee from the Big Sur Half worked tirelessly on recycling and composting throughout the event.  Additional efforts including the well-received Virtual Goodie Bag, solar energy to power timing mats and PA systems, ride sharing options, clothing donations, organic food, carbon offset opportunities and more helped the event achieve a total of 32 points for the Gold Award

JUST RUN News
A Continuing Success Story
The Big Sur Marathon's youth fitness program, JUST RUN, continues to promote running and healthy lifestyle choices in children throughout the country.  The 2009 - 1010 school year has proven to be an undeniable success; already, 5,000 children representing 10 states, have logged over 90,000 miles.  We are hoping that many adults participating in our various Sunday events will join their children and 2,000 others to support our JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K.  This fun run, held along the beautiful coastline in Pacific Grove on April 24th, awards money to participating schools to benefit their physical education programs.

We hope you enjoyed this issue of the Big Sur Marathon On the Run E-Newsletter.  Feel free to contact us with comments or suggestions.  As always, we welcome your input.
