A Message from the Race Director |
Thank you
The Marathon Board and staff meet the week prior to our events for our "Last Supper", held at Rocky Point Restaurant (mile 15.6 on the course). The dinner's theme is that "you are only as good as your last race." We received high marks from all of you that indicate that we met and, in many cases, exceeded your expectations. One letter I received from Barbara Robben of Berkeley, CA reads in part,
"After my event was concluded, I walked around the area to view the technical aspects of the race scene: fencing, buses, sweats bags, convoys, etc. What struck me in particular was the competence of the folks working in the various areas. Each person seemed to know exactly what to do and had the authority to do it, as well as being recognized by the BSIM organization. Congratulations and thanks to all!"
As you'll read below, we have new initiatives for the 2009 Half Marathon as well as the Mud Run and Marathon events in 2010. Thank you for your continued support and participation in our events, and we'll continue to work hard for you. Wally Kastner Race Director |
What's New |
Big Sur's Official Facebook Page The Big Sur Marathon is now live on Facebook. This is a great vehicle for us to communicate with people interested in our events, as well as an opportunity for participants to post pictures, videos and personal stories. To become a fan, click HERE.
Marathon Shirts for 2010
Due to popular demand, we are returning to gender specific sizing for our popular event shirts. When you register for our 25th presentation beginning September 1st, you'll be able to choose either men's or women's shirt sizing. Don't forget to check out our merchandise page for additional concession items!
Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay Registration is now open for the 2009 Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay to be held November 15, 2009. Other events include the 10-Mile Walk, and, on Saturday, November 14th, the Run Forrest Run 5K and JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K fun run, presented by Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. This year's event offers a 9 wave start to reduce course crowding along with a slightly altered route that will give runners and walkers more time next to the Bay in Pacific Grove. For more info, and to register, click HERE. |
Big Sur's Mile Marker Program |
A Unique Opportunity
Our well-known cello mile markers have survived over two decades of runners, weather, and vehicle mishaps and it's time to replace them. The Big Sur Marathon has commissioned artist John Cerney of Salinas to create a unique set of mile markers that will provide a humourous, motivating, and inspirational backdrop along the marathon course.
The Big Sur Marathon is offering sponsorship of each mile for a donation of $1,000 to help defray the cost of creating 27 markers. The mile will be yours for a 5-year period at which time you will have the option to continue your sponsorship or not. Your donation is tax-deductible.
Please email sally@bsim.org or call 831.625.6226 with any questions. To download the donation form and learn more, click HERE.

In 2010...the Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge |
2 Marathons...2 Coasts...6 Days
Only the fittest (or craziest!) ever attempt back-to-back marathons, much less 3,000 miles apart. In 2010, the Big Sur Marathon would like to honor those runners willing to accept the challenge in celebration of Big Sur's 25th presentation.
The challenge will be open to limited number of participants on a first come, first served basis during registration which opens September 1, 2009. Those who sign-up will receive a Boston 2 Big Sur ASICS jacket, a custom participant bib and finisher's medallion, and will celebrate their accomplishment in a special finish tent in Big Sur's Marathon Village.
If you sign up for the challenge, you must either qualify to run Boston in 2010 (unless already qualified) or register through their charity program. When you pick up your pick at Big Sur, you must also present proof that you did finish Boston in 2010 (print out your finish information from Boston's online results).

Big Sur's Green Team |
Going Green Big Sur welcomes enthusiasts to join us in both November and April for a chance to run or walk along the "ragged edge of the western world." Because our organization understands the importance and urgency of developing ecologically sound practices surrounding our events, our Green Team is taking steps to increase our environmental sustainability. Our events impact the surrounding Monterey Peninsula communities and our efforts to "reduce, re-use, and recycle" go a long way towards keeping our destination cities both "green and pristine."

Sponsor Thanks |
At the April marathon, our longtime footwear and apparel sponsor ASICS announced their continued and increased level of sponsorship in coming years. We're excited about bringing more of their 'technical fabric' shirts to our runners, partnering on new projects and welcoming them as sponsors of our annual Mud Run.
We also want to thank ALL our sponsors for their wonderful and ongoing support of the marathon, highlighting just a few:
- KSBW TV for great pre and race event coverage and promotion
- DOLE for sustaining our runners with an abundance of fruits and vegetables
- GATORADE for working with us as we focus more on 'going green'
- CLIF BAR for providing their awesome pace teams
- COMMUNITY HOSPITAL OF THE MONTEREY PENISULA for the all-important medical support AND sponsorship of our JUST RUN 3K and youth fitness program
- MICHELOB ULTRA for a new "Race to the Ultra" village
- EARTHBOUND FARM for increasing their sponsorship level this year. We'll see you at the Half Marathon!

JUST RUN News |
School's Out!
With another school year coming to a close, JUST RUN® can be proud it played a part in the lives of 6,400 children. The award-winning youth fitness program was implemented in 53 schools in 2008-09, most within Monterey County, but others spanning throughout California and four other states. 158,000 miles were covered, 9,000 good deeds were recorded and 10 classes 'ran across the USA.' Nearly 2,500 children and their families took part in our two JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K races and many others ran in additional local community races. Way to go kids!
Website Gets a Facelift
Check out the newly revamped JUST RUN® website at www.justrun.org. We've added more photos, new videos, and a simpler way to find just what you're looking for. The mileage recording log and Run Across the USA and Europe features, both key elements of the program, are unchanged. Forms, instructions, mile markers can be printed from the site. Plus, there's tons of tips on nutrition, exercise (geared separately to students and leaders), local race information and more. Check it out today! | |
