Greetings!

Welcome to the second issue of the Big Sur Marathon's official e-newsletter, a quarterly publication designed to keep you informed of happenings, items of interest, and new developments in our organization and events.  If you're registered for one of our races, you'll also receive timely e-blasts with more specific event-related information. We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and welcome any feedback you'd like to send us.

A Message from the Race Director

Wally Kastner head shot Dear Friends,

November marked the sixth presentation of our Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay.  The participant field was our biggest ever, bringing runners and walkers from 48 states and 10 countries to enjoy 13.1 miles of magnificent Monterey Bay coastline.  We've got lots of great race weekend photos in our Half Marathon Photo Gallery along with a brief video of the half marathon on the website homepage..
We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to our sponsors, contributors, suppliers and volunteers whose hard work and support ensure the success of our events. With 2009 just around the corner, we are now changing our focus towards our Mud Run, coming in March, and our April Big Sur Marathon events. We hope many of you will join us for our other races and become part of our Big Sur "family."
What's New & Updates

Marathon Registration
If you haven't yet registered for one of our April events, don't forget that the price is going up effective January 1, 2009. Also, the 21-Miler and 10.6-Milers are close to a sell out. Be sure to pass the word on to any interested friends.

Training
Interested in an online program, a "hands on" training club (for folks in the Bay area), or a detailed training guide? We offer all three! Learn more here...

2009 Timing Device
Please note that we will not be using the Champion Chip as our timing device in 2009. In keeping with technological advances in event timing, Race Central (our timing company) is now using the Chrono Track disposable D-Tag.

Online Community
If you haven't already done so, be sure to check out our Online Community that features Blogs, Discussion Forums, a Training Log and Route Planner.  This is a great place to ask questions and get answers. Click HERE to visit the Online Community.
Get Down & Dirty at the Mud Run
Mud RunIf you got a little wet or windblown at the Big Sur Half, you got off easy.  The fourth annual Big Sur Mud Run will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 and we guarantee that you will get wet and you will get muddy!  This challenging but fun course includes hills, water, obstacles, drill sargeants, and plenty of mud. Sponsored by the U.S. Army Garrison-Presidio of Monterey and California State University, the Mud Run offers both a team competition and individual categories for both civilian and military.
JUST RUN! Update
JUST RUN®, the Big Sur Marathon's award winning youth fitness program, has some exciting new features! As an adjunct to a virtual Run Across the USA, participating children can now Run Across Europe as well! In addition to accumulating mileage for their school or youth organization, the kids can click on hundreds of geographic, historical, nutritional and fun locations that are web-linked to a map of Europe.

Another exciting feature on the JUST RUN website is "JUST Taste".  This program feature was designed to introduce children to a wide variety of healthy foods.  JUST Taste lists 100 fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes that provide nutritious alternatives to unhealthy and fast food choices.  A wealth of information is accompanied by recipes that can be tried in a home or school setting.

Sponsor Opportunities
Want to connect your business with marathon runners?  Demographics of our Big Sur participants indicate a high level of income and education - a perfect target for businesses and organizations looking for new marketing opportunities.  From high tech to banking to telecommunications and retail, the Big Sur Marathon offers significant 'touchpoints' with a ready-to-engage audience.  If you think your business or employer might be interested in considering sponsorship of the Big Sur Marathon and/or its additional events and programs (Big Sur Half Marathon, Mud Run, JUST RUN youth fitness program and races), please contact Julie Armstrong, Marketing Communications Director, julie@bsim.org.

ALSO...
Advertising placements are available in our upcoming Marathon race program.  If interested in this or other low-cost exposure opportunities, contact Julie@bsim.org.
Opportunity to become a JUST RUN Leader
As a runner you are probably already an advocate of exerecise and health.  JUST RUN is a FREE program that promotes fitness and healthy lifestyle choices for our children and youth.  If you would like to become a leader in the fight against childhood obesity, we would assist you in starting a JUST RUN program at a school or youth organization near you.  You can learn more about the program at www.justrun.org or by contacting Susan Love at susanwlove@sbcglobal.net.

Happy holidays to all and be sure to train safely this winter!  As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
