SOME CHANGES FOR 2008
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
D-TAG TIMING...Please note that we will not be using ChampionChips as our 2008 timing devices! In keeping with technological advances in event timing, Race Central (our race timing company) is now using the ChronoTrack system. The traditional chip will be replaced by a "D-Tag." Advantages to the runner include a disposable tag, accurate timing, no fees for lost or unreturned tags, and less pre- and post-race hassles. The D-Tags will be attached to your race bib number along with instructions on how to remove them and attach to your shoe. For more information on the D-Tag click HERE.
WAVE STARTS & COURSE CHANGE...An increase in the number of participants usually translates into course crowding. To ensure that the race remains user friendly, we will utilize wave starts approximately 1:30 to 2 minutes apart for five corrals. Because the events are tag timed, your net time will not be affected. Your corral number (A through E) is located on your race bib. We are also moving the start two blocks east of last year's start line to Del Monte near Camino El Estero. Runners will go east on Del Monte in the ocean side lane until reaching Del Monte entrance to the Naval Postgraduate School where they will make a u-turn and go west until turning left on Camino Aguajito. Following that turn, the course remains the same as last year. We need to make sure that the intersection of Del Monte and Washington is clear when the elites cross it at mile two. A course map will be available on the website and in the race program you'll receive in your goody bag. |
OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SATURDAY'S 5K and 3K...if you will be here on Saturday, November 8th, we hope you and your family will participate in (or spectate) either the Run Forrest Run 5K or the JUST RUN! Just Kids 3K fun run. This is a great warm-up for Sunday's half marathon and there will be great post-event food courtesy of Bubba Gump along with post-race festivities at the Steinbeck Plaza on Cannery Row. This is also a great opportunity to take a tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
PICKUP PAL...Large sports competitions such as the Big Sur Half can be a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, coming mostly as a result of travel to the host city and local road transportation. Pickup Pal provides a ridesharing program that is free of charge and eco-friendly. To learn more about or take part in this program, click HERE.
BYOB...This one probably caught your eye, but BYOB means "bring your own (water) bottle." In an effort to reduce the number of paper water cups used, we will have a special aid station that will be dedicated to refilling water bottles for those runners carrying one. By carrying a water bottle, runners have access to better hydration and don't have to stop as frequently at an aid station to grab a small cup which allows one to maintain a good race pace.
HALF MARATHON POSTER...Artist Marie Gabrielle has once more produced a beautiful watercolor of the Pt. Pinos area of Pacific Grove that you'll be running through. The image will appear on our race shirts, and the poster is available for sale at www.bigsurhalfmarathon.org and also at the Health & Fitness Expo on race weekend.
