TXU Energy Commits More Green, Helps Big D Go Green

More trees are coming to Dallas, thanks to a $100,000 sponsorship of the Texas Trees Foundation (TTF) by TXU Energy.TXU Logo  Longtime corporate partner, TXU Energy has enabled the TTF to expand the tree inventory to 74,000 trees at the TXU Energy and Hamilton Park Urban Tree Farms.  Over the past several years TXU Energy has provided hundreds of volunteers and financial support to enable the TXU Energy Urban Tree Farm to become the nations's largest non-profit urban tree farm.

"We know the important role trees play as Dallas looks to go green, and this additional support will only advance this cause," said Kelli Rod, Vice President of Community Relations for TXU Energy. "Our near decade-long relationship with the Texas Trees Foundation is a vital component of commitment to do our part to help improve the environment."

"Nothing is as important as preserving our environment," said Janette Monear, Executive Director of TTF. "We appreciate our relationship with TXU Energy and look forward to putting these added resources to good use for the betterment of the North Texas community."

The Energy to Make a Difference

When a community comes together with energy, commitment and drive great thingsDaffron Kids happen.  This was definitely the case for this past spring.  Volunteers helped out at the farms on every weekend and corporations showed their support by sponsoring several projects that took place at schools and in communities throughout DFW.

Texas Trees Foundation volunteers and the corporate community recognize the important role they have in shaping the future of the earth.  This past month we hosted over 300 volunteers at the tree farms. These volunteers planted 10,000 seedlings and staked, weeded, and transferred trees to larger containers.

In celebration of Earth Day, Sprinkles Cupcakes, located in North Dallas, donated proceeds from the sale of their delicious vanilla cupcakes to the TTF.  Over $3,500 was raised from this campaign (more than any other Sprinkles location in the nation)!!  If you haven't stopped by their bakery and tried these gourmet cupcakes, make plans to do so soon!

TREEmendous strides were made also in area schools through partnerships with corporations and individuals.  Through the TREEmendous Schools Program, hundreds of students had the chance to connect with nature through planting trees on their campuses.  The Arbor Day Foundation partnered with the Texas Trees Foundation to plant trees at Clara Oliver Elementary through the Arbor Day Foundation Trees For Success Program.  Twenty-five large trees were planted by Home Depot employeees and students on May 15th.  With corporate partnerships through Bank of AmericaRees Associates, and Texas Instruments, trees were planted at several schools throughout DFW.  Read more in next month's "Greener Views".  Because of YOU, we're planting for the future!

Create Some Energy and Get Close to Nature

Are you nature deprived?  Yes, you are, according to groundbreaking new research showing that obesity, depression and other health problems can be alleviated simply by spending more time outside.  According to the April 2008 HP School issue of Fitness Magazine, most Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors.  A full one-quarter of Americans engaged in no leisure-time physical activitiy at all in 1996, according to a report by the Surgeon General. Industry estimates show that this year the average American will spend the equivalent of 71 days in front of the TV and more than a week surfing the Internet and our bodies are paying the price.

Connecting With Nature

Participating in outside activity feels good because of our innate affinity for other living things and natural surroundings that can motivate us to move more.  Richard Louv, bestselling author of "Last Child in the Woods" and recipient of the 2008 Audubon Medal, gives some great suggestions for creating outdoor experiences for children on his website www.richardlouv.com.

Green Gym Programs

True "green gym" programs got their start in Europe and they're now spreading around the globe.  The structured no-cost progams consist of groups of people who meet generally one to three times per week to get active and have fun while doing good for the wellness of the planet.  Program activities, such as composting and reforestation efforts, are conservation - and education - oriented.   These programs, like the volunteer days at the TTF Urban Tree Farms, provide a great way to be out and active in nature, learn something new, and connect with others who share a desire to improve the condition of the plant.  For more information visit www,greenlivingideas.com
