November is American Diabetes Month


 

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. During American Diabetes Month in November, you can help build awareness on this common disease, how to live with it or, best of all, how to prevent it.

Most of the food we consume is turned into glucose, or sugar, that our bodies use for energy. Our bodies make insulin to help glucose get into our cells. Diabetes prevents your body from either making enough insulin or using its own insulin effectively. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

smiling african-american womanDid you know that type 2 diabetes may be prevented or delayed with lifestyle changes? A recent three-year study by The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases shows that by achieving modest weight loss through dietary changes and increased physical activity, an individual's chance of developing type 2 diabetes may be sharply reduced. The study concluded that participants who lost as little as 5-7 percent of their body weight, achieved by a diet low in fat and calories and by routine physical activity (30 minutes a day, five or more days each week), delayed or prevented the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Great American Smokeout, QuitlineNC Target Tobacco Use

man with cigarette and scissorsEvery third Thursday in November, many Americans join the American Cancer Society in observing the Great American Smokeout. This annual event is designed to educate and empower smokers to quit smoking. On November 17, communities all over the country will provide support and resources to encourage smokers to take the first step toward a tobacco-free life by quitting for 24 hours.

Generic Lipitor® Available November 30

There's great news for members who take medication to control their cholesterol. The nation's top-selling cholesterol lowering medication, Lipitor® (atorvastatin), will be available as a generic starting November 30, 2011. FDA-approved generics are safe, and they meet the same U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards of quality and purity as the brand versions.

Diabetes Medications, Supplies Covered for Monthly Copay

glucose monitor and test stripThe State Health Plan seeks to help members with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, better manage their conditions. As part of that goal, diabetic test strips are covered under the Plan's pharmacy benefit for a single copay up to a specific quantity per month for members who are insulin and noninsulin dependent. Don't worry if you exceed that monthly amount, because you may receive additional supplies through your medical benefit. More information about this benefit is available on the Plan's website located under diabetic testing.

NCDOC Employees Empowered to Live Healthier

woman with arms raised overheadOver the past year, employees of the North Carolina Department of Correction (DOC) participated in a worksite wellness program at three Raleigh facilities. The program consisted of on-site health screenings followed by one-on-one health coaching sessions with a pharmacist. The goal of the program was to raise individuals' awareness of their health status and empower them to set - and achieve - their health goals.

Planning to retire soon? Don't forget to enroll for health retiree at computerbenefits electronically through the North Carolina Retirement Systems, a division of the N.C. Department of State Treasurer. You may start the electronic enrollment after you receive a letter from the Retirement Systems acknowledging their receipt of your retirement application Form 6.
