National Immunization Awareness Month

national immunization awareness badgeAugust is National Immunization Awareness Month. It's a good time to review how important vaccines are in preventing diseases.

Vaccines are responsible for the control of many infectious diseases that were once common in the United States, including polio, measles, pertussis (whooping cough), mumps and tetanus, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

This month's Member Focus features articles on immunization topics. In addition, members may go to the Achieve Solutions® website for articles on how vaccines prevent disease and common myths about immunizations. For more information, use the website's search function in the upper right corner and enter "immunizations," then click on the articles. Members can also visit the State Health Plan's NC HealthSmart section of the website to view preventive care and immunization benefits.

Remember, prevention is still the best cure!

Adding Newborns to Your Health Coverage

photo of newborn with parentsHaving a baby? Congratulations! Please remember that you do have a choice of coverage effective dates for your newborn. Members have the option to add a newborn to the State Health Plan on the first day of the month in which the child is born or on the first day of the month following the date of birth.

For a newborn to be covered from the date of birth, the coverage effective date must be the first of the month in which the child is born.
