Adding Newborns to Health Coverage
Prior to an employee adding a newborn, it is important for health benefits representatives to educate employees on the choice of coverage effective dates for newborns. Members have the option to add a newborn to the State Health Plan on the first day of the month in which the child is born or on the first day of the month following the date of birth.
The Plan has received numerous requests to retroactively change the newborn's effective date. The majority of these requests are the result of the member not understanding that for the newborn to be covered from the date of birth, the coverage effective date must be the first of the month in which the child is born.
