Follow-up Enrollment Update

The State Health Plan is conducting a Follow-up Enrollment in July!

Health benefits for teachers and state employees are determined by the North Carolina General Assembly. Senate Bill 323 became law May 23 and House Bill 578 was signed into law by Governor Perdue May 26, making changes to premiums, copays and deductibles that will become effective on September 1, 2011.

Since these changes affect your out-of-pocket costs, a Follow-up Enrollment will be offered and will take place July 18 - 29, 2011. During this period, members will have the opportunity to change their plan elections and add eligible dependents. To learn more about the changes taking effect on September 1, click here.

Members can expect to receive additional information on how to take advantage of this special Follow-up Enrollment period in the next few weeks.
New Look for Your State Health Plan ID Card

The State Health Plan has made some changes to your identification card. Effective July 1, the name of your employing agency will now be listed on your ID card. You will see it displayed in the upper right hand corner of your card, above your group number. If you are retired, you will see State Retirement System noted. At the bottom of your card, you will see the plan you chose to enroll in - Standard or Basic. Be sure to check your ID cards when you receive them for the new Plan year starting July 1.

Billing Cycles

The State Health Plan expects a few delays to the billing process due to Annual Enrollment. Bills are being produced and mailed as close as possible to your normal billing date. Premiums will be due by the fifth day of the month.

Reduction in Force and Health Coverage

Employees who lose their jobs as a result of a reduction in force (RIF) will continue to have coverage under the State Health Plan for up to 12 months, as long as the employee has 12 or more months of service and the employee was covered by the Plan at the time of separation from service - or completed a contract term of employment of 10 or 11 months as an employee of a local school administrative unit. Employees are not eligible for RIF health coverage if the employee is provided health coverage on a non-contributory basis by a subsequent employer.
