If you are still contemplating where to take the family for Spring Break, may we suggest one last romp in the snow? Ouray offers many family friendly activities that cost little to nothing! Below are our hints and tips for saving some green over Spring Break in March!
1. Here at the Box Canyon Lodge kids 18 and under stay for free! We will also be more than happy to extend to you discounted passes to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool with advanced notice of at least 1 week from arrival.
2. The local sledding hill, known as Vinegar Hill, has been Ouray's sledding hill for over 100 years. It is located on the east side of town between Fifth and Sixth Avenue. The top and bottom of Fifth Street, between these two avenues, is blocked off with hay bales to driving traffic. Free to the public, just bring your own sleds!
3. The Ouray Ice Skating Rink is located at Rotary Park, approximately one mile north of the Hot Springs Pool. The rink is typically open from late December throughout the winter as long as winter temperatures remain cold enough to maintain ice. So bring your skates or rent a pair from Ouray Toys on Main St. and enjoy the fun atmosphere of an outdoor ice rink. Or, pick up a game of "broom ball" with some of the locals. The rink is maintained by the City of Ouray and the help of volunteers. There is a small warming hut located at the rink. Lights at the rink allow for skating in the cold and silent hours of a winter evening with stars shining above.
4. Ouray is a great place for you to teach your children how to ski. The free rope tow at our local ski hill on 3rd Ave. saves money from having to purchase lift tickets and saves your energy on having to climb to the top after each "run". The ski hill rope tow operates on weekends and after school hours. You will need to bring your own skis.
5. During the winter there are free climbing clinics for kids at the Ouray Ice Park. The next two clinics will be held February 13th and March 6th. The clinics are free to kids 18 and under. The necessary climbing equipment will be provided just dress warmly. Give us a call if you would like more information.
