Happy New Year
January 2008

Karen & Rich Avery, OwnersHappy New Year!

Have you ever wanted to do something that seems out of character?  Maybe others think it is crazy, but, you think it seems intriging.  Now that we have started a new year, it is time to give those impulses a little feeding!  I did.

I wanted to try ice climbing and with the encouragement of a friend and a nice class offered by San Juan Mountain Guides, I was able to experience the thrill of ice climbing without having to commit to the sport without a test drive.

San Juan Mountain Guides offer a 1/2 day, Intro to Ice class.  They let you borrow the gear including the ice axes, the boots, the crampons, and the helmet.  They even make sure you have the appropriate gloves and outerwear.

You head off to the Ouray Ice Park and before you know it, you are geared up, holding axes in your hands, kicking the ice, and moving up.  What a thrill!  They have a new area at the park that is accessible from the street so you don't have to hike into the canyon before you start to climb.  You climb first, then, you are lowered  back down to the ground.

I climbed on the Opening Day of the Ice Park and there were a bunch of "Never Evers" with me.   At the end of the three hour class, I was tired.  My arms were sore, my hands were very tired, and my toes were cold.  But, I had a great big smile across my face and a real sense of accomplishment.  I did something that fed my spirit, my sense of adventure.

It is a new year so, if you have a desire to try something new, you should.

May your family know peace in 2008 and may you enjoy great health.   We hope that we will see you soon!

Warm regards,
Karen & Rich Avery

Joanne BurkdollJoanne Burkdoll works in our Housekeeping Department and is on her second tour of duty at the Box Canyon Lodge.  She worked here for ten years back in the 1990s.   Lucky for us, she is back!  She came back to work here in September after a long hiatus.  We are delighted as she takes great pride in her work.

Joanne loves horses and she loves camping, fishing and hunting.  She has three grown children, five  grandchildren, one dog and one cat.  It turns out that two of her children each had a set of twins!
Cross Country Skiing
With all the snow that has been falling lately, the cross countryCross Country Skiing skiing couldn't be better!  Ironton is just 6 miles south and is very well taken care of by the Ouray Nordic Council.  It is groomed regularly by volunteers and  is very well maintained.  Within the city limits, the River Trail is a nice loop.  It is mostly flat and well traveled.  If you like more hills, the Amphitheater Road is fun.  The uphill is work, but, the downhill is a gas!  Come check out all the possibilities and avoid cabin fever!
Weehawken Creative Arts

Watch the Weehawken Creative Arts Calendar.  Each month, they offer classes in all kinds of arts for both children and adults.

In January, you can learn to watercolor on 100% Waterproof Yupo paper, in February, you can learn to make sushi from one of Ouray County's best chefs.  March classes include the Best of Photoshop Elements, poetry, and cooking while April classes include a pastel and oil painting class as well as a writing class.

This summer, their plans include theatrical camps where people can come to Ouray for a week and enroll in some great drama classes.  There is also some phenomenal photography courses offered as well.
It is always our distinct pleasure to serve you and we hope that you will always find the Box Canyon Lodge a relaxing home away from home.

Sincerely,

Karen & Rich Avery
