Another year has flown by. For us, there have been so many changes and they have all been great. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued support, feedback, and kind words. We could not do what we do without you. Our staff is equally as important. We are so lucky to have our dedicated and passionate staff. Every team member goes above and beyond, and Rich & I would be lost without them. We love what we do, and are very fortunate to serve you and your friends and families. We have been working hard to get things in shipshape before winter completely settles in. We have one new hot tub in and the other three should be installed sometime in the near future, weather permitting. Our new reservation system implementation occurs during the first week of December. We think that we will be able to deliver superior service to our guests with this new system as our front office staff will be more efficient once we work out the kinks. We are also working to implement an in-room guest recycling program in the near future. It should be up and ready sometime in December or early January. Happy Holidays! We hope that we will see you soon!
Warm regards, Karen & Rich Avery

Employee Corner
Our housekeeping staff keeps the Box Canyon Lodge in tip-top condition. These ladies take such pride in their work and it shows. From the moment you enter one of our guest rooms until the moment you leave, they ensure you have the cleanest room possible.
Pat is our head housekeeper and has worked at the Box Canyon Lodge for nearly eleven years. She manages the housekeeping staff and she ensures the cleanest linens and the strictest standards.
Pat lives in Ridgway and is a true native. She was born in Montrose which is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Ouray. When she isn't working at the motel, Pat is hiking in the hills, working in her garden, or enjoying time with her grandchildren.
Next time you are here, stop by the laundry and say "Hi". She is always happy to talk to guests and enjoys hearing their comments. |

Live Theater Returns to Ouray
Live theater is returning to the Opera House in Ouray. Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" will be performed on Friday, December 7 at 7:30 in the historic building. The play will be performed as an old-fashioned radio show, complete with sound effects and music. Several restaurants will have pre-theater dinner menus designed to get you to the theater before curtain time. These include the Outlaw, the Bistro at Billy Goat Gruff, the Bon Ton, the Buen Tiempo, and the Silver Nugget. Just show them your tickets or mention the play when you make your reservation. Tickets are just $10/person. To reserve tickets or to make dinner reservations please call us at 800.327.5080 or 970.325.4981 and it will be our pleasure to take care of you!

Ouray Ice Park Opens December 15th
Attention all ice climbers! The temperatures have finally dropped and the ice farming has begun at the Ouray Ice Park. Here is the very, very, beginning.
This year brings some new additions to the ice park. There is a dedicated short climb for children where there will not be a requirement to enter the canyon. This area is also going to be used for some adaptive climbing clinics. If you are interested in learning to climb, give us a ring and we will get you signed up with some great guides. There are classes offered for every ability by the San Juan Mountain Guides.
The Ouray Ice Festival happens on January 9 - 13th. It is not just for climbers however. There are some great viewing stands all over the park and it is a lot of fun watching the world class climbers demonstrate their skills. If you can't make those dates, the ice park has folks climbing every day and you can catch a glimpse.

Winter Activities for Families & Children
Not only is December full of events to help make your holiday season come to life, but there are also some great activities that can add to your Ouray Experience all winter long. Here are some of my suggestions:
Wildlife viewing is always interesting in the winter months. Frequently, the Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep are sighted in the mountains surrounding Ouray. The bald eagles nest along the river about 10 miles north of town. They swoop down and find salmon for feasting. Large herds of elk bed down in the meadows north of town too. Of course, the deer are an easy find in town, especially near the Hot Springs Pool.
The Painting Marmot offers art classes for kids. You can buy the supplies there or just use hers. Drop in, leave the kids and have some adult time while the kids create. During December, she has all kinds of art projects so the kids can make great gifts for Grandma. She also offers birthday parties if you want to do something a little different. The Bach'lers Stable is open all winter and offers either wagon rides or sleigh rides depending on the snow depth. He has a beautiful setting near the Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour just outside of town. The rides will be about one hour in duration with a stop for some hot chocolate and storytelling. He uses two 1600 pound mules (Sammy & Tammy) to pull the vehicle!
Angel Ridge Ranch is also offering sleigh rides this winter. A team of Percherons, fully equipped with sleigh bells, take you on a nice ride. Upon return, you will be greeted with a crackling fire and warm drinks. Groups of 10 or more are encouraged. Departures are every Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm or you can make your own arrangements for special times that you book in advance! |
