President's Column
| Greetings MAMEsters! This newsletter will find many of you getting ready for your summer, or already enjoying it! It is always exciting to look forward to a summer of relaxing, reading and catching up. I can't wait! There are plenty of professional development opportunities out there, the Joint Conference and our Summer Institute on Common Core, to name a few. Last week, Tim, Tom and I met with MLA and MACUL. We are looking into the possibility of overlapping conferences with MLA in the future. This would allow us to share vendors and possibly some sessions. Our meeting with the MACUL officers, Ric Wiltse and Bill Wiersma, started the ball rolling on becoming a SIG(Special Interest Group) with MACUL. This process begins with a petition of MACUL/MAME members to form a SIG. Check the MACUL website to become members, and then electronically sign the petition in Tim's column. Also you will see an option where you can vote on the SIG name and volunteer to be a leader in this historic joint venture. The SIG will need a Director, an Asst. Director and Communications officer. In addition we will need MAME members to sit on a steering committee. So, take the time to let your voice be heard, and then look into your heart to see if you are interested in taking a leading role in this new venture. Take a moment to send your warm wishes for a great adventure in Mumbai to Tim and Nancy Staal! We were so lucky to share the past few years with you. Have a wonderful experience and we look forward to reading about this new exciting chapter in your lives! A HUGE thank you to Kathy Lester for a job well done on the newsletter! This is her last issue. Let her know how much you have enjoyed reading Media Matters! Good luck Kathy! And, if you are interested in filling the position, let me know. MAME Members, I wish you rest, relaxation and reading this summer. Enjoy, you've earned it! Sue Lay, MAME President |
From MAME Headquarters
|

First, I just want to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU! to all of you MAME members who have been so supportive during my tenure as Executive Director. I am proud to have been a part of MAME since my first conference - MAME 5 , and I will continue to be a MAME member into the future - you'll hear from me on the list serve and elsewhere. Thanks!Second, I want to share a little more of what I'll be doing for the next couple of years. I have accepted the position of Head Librarian for the American School of Bombay in Mumbai, India. The American School of Bombay is an elite private school catering to an international student body (700+ students from about 50 countries) wanting an excellent, high-tech education. It's exciting to return to once again being a librarian (rather than an administrator) working with students and teachers. On a personal level, I have begun blogging in preparation for our time in India. I've called the blog "Michigan and Mumbai" and I'm trying to share some of my thoughts about life in general in both locales. I hope that my sharing of thoughts and experiences through the blog will help readers gain a sense both of the two wonderful places to live and of my thoughts and reflections. You can read the blog here: http://tnstaal.blogspot.com/The first time you look at it, you may wish to do a search within the blog using FAQ as your search term - I've put in several entries trying to give folks an overview of our situation. Finally, I want to reassure everyone on the future of MAME. MAME is moving forward and re-inventing ourselves in ways that maintain our identity and join in collaboration with other organizations. The organization is in good hands under the leadership of the current executive board: Sue Lay - President, Tom Stream - President-Elect, Rachel Markel - Past President, along with Julie Harris, Gwenn Marchesano, Jeanna Walker and Bruce Popejoy. Our first collaboration is the formation of a Special Interest Group (SIG) within MACUL. This special interest group will be independent from MAME, but we hope that most MAME members will also choose to be members of MACUL and the special interest group for school librarians. If you are already a member of MACUL, you can click on the link that follows and sign the petition to help form this SIG: http://bit.ly/LgvIT8In addition to MAME 39: "Enter Here and Learn" (which looks great - wish I could be there!) other collaborative efforts will be forthcoming and I am confident of MAME's good future.
