President's Column
| Has spring finally arrived? And, is it here to stay? We can only hope! As the school year winds down, the MAME Board has ramped up for the future. Changes are on the horizon for MAME. Our board is looking at the transition of functioning without an executive director. We wish Tim and Nancy well in their new adventure in India. And, we cannot wait to hear about it! Tim leaves us officially as of June 30th. At the May board meeting we welcomed Karen Becknell onboard as our new Database Manager. We will miss Liz Lewis as she transitions out of this position. Many times Liz has soothed ruffled feathers and been that smiling face, which is often someone's first contact with MAME. Thank you Liz. Good luck Karen. Meetings are planned for later in May to keep/open our network connections. As School Librarians, we know the value of networking! Executive Board members will be meeting with MACUL, MLA, and MCLS. Please be patient while we work through this time of change. And, if you can support MAME in any way, please offer. It is our hope that we can maintain our own identity, while functioning with these other organizations. Mark your calendars for July 24! Summer Institute will focus on Common Core. Get your registration in early! And, bring a friend! The Fall Conference, Enter Here and Learn, is also looking at a new format. Will Richardson will be our closing keynote. I can't wait. Sadly, we will be losing Kathy Lester as our wonderful Newsletter editor. She has done a terrific job, and her work receives some of the most positive comments from our members. Kathy will end her term with the June newsletter. Let her know how much you have enjoyed her work! And, if you are interested in the position, please contact me. Have a great end of your school year! May of 2012 has entered on a high note for me. I have been lucky to have served as the Executive Director for MAME for three years, and we just had another very productive and hopeful MAME board meeting. The organization is in good hands under the leadership of the current executive board: Sue Lay - President, Tom Stream - President-Elect, Rachel Markel - Past President, along with Julie Harris, Gwenn Marchesano, Jeanna Walker and Bruce Popejoy. This group has some great ideas and is making good progress on re-inventing MAME in a way that maintains our identity and collaborates with other organizations. I know you will hear more about this as plans move forward. In addition, there are a couple of good events planned for the summer: First there is The Michigan Joint Education Conference in Ypsilanti on June 20 "Connecting Across the Curricula". It promises to be a very good day with a variety of presentations on topics of interest to school librarians including technology integration, cross-discipline approaches, instructional leadership, and core-curriculum issues.
Plans are also moving forward for our MAME summer workshop to be held at Ingham ISD on July 24, as well as on the MAME Fall Conference: "Enter Here to Learn."I also heard some good news this week from a parent group in Jackson MI who is working to restore librarians in the school there. Here's what they said: "Our committee has kept at it and we received some good news last month when the superintendent added a line item to next year's budget for 2 librarians (our district currently has none). We have been holding fundraisers, applying for grants and we now have an online donation site! http://parkside.jpsk12.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=ozqn4Zma0i8%3d&tabid=486. If there is anything you can do to get the word out we would greatly appreciate it."Finally, my wife and I are working on our move to India - creating checklists, filling out forms, getting ready to pack stuff and deciding what stays here and what goes with. We had a great visit there and are excited about the new school and our new lives. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you MAME members who have been so supportive. I am proud to have been a part of MAME since my first conference - MAME 5 , and I will continue as a MAME member into the future - you'll hear from me on the list serve and elsewhere. Thanks!

App of the Month

Google Sky Map
Android Free
Sky Map, as described by Google, "...turns your mobile phone into a window on the night sky." It not only identifies items in the sky but also lets you search for items. Not sure what happened to that pesky Mars? Turn on Google Sky Map! Sky Map utilizes the clock, GPS and compass on your mobile phone. Point your mobile phone towards the sky and Sky Map will locate stars and planets. Search for a star or planet and Sky Map will direct you, zoom in and out and it even works in the daytime. This is a very interesting app.
If you would like to suggest a app, please email your idea to: Judy Hauser, judy.hauser@oakland.k12.mi.us .Any app will be considered whether it is for productivity, utility, or fun.

Anne Gnagi is retiring at the end of this school year. She has been a dedicated teacher and leader in the Holt School District for over forty years. She is well known for her remarkable storytelling ability as well as her professionalism.
Every year, Mrs. Gnagi researches famous people with the 5th grade students of Washington Woods Middle School. After the students complete their research, they dress up as their notable person and share out what they have learned at an evening gala held in the library.
Mrs. Gnagi always researches someone right along with her students. This year she researched the life of Agatha Christie. Most teachers would probably get a wig for the part, but Mrs. Gnagi actually cut and dyed her hair for the part!
The public is invited to a special recognition evening for library media specialist Anne Gnagi on Tuesday June 12, 7pm at the Holt Senior High Library.
