MAME President: Rachel Markel

As we come to the end of another year, we are often reminded of the year's happenings, whether through the multitude of best and worst lists or our own personal reflections.

2011 has not been the easiest year for those of us in education. Continued budget cuts have forced many of our colleagues into classrooms, early retirements, or unemployment. The ripples from these cuts have been felt by all of us and have impacted our organization as well. As we look the future, we have some important decisions to make about how we would like to go forward as an organization.

Later this month the board will be sending out some information for the membership to review and comment on. I would ask that each member read through the information and give feedback.

On a related note, many of you have probably seen the news that MACUL will no longer be charging dues. Instead, they are folding dues into their conference registration and charging separately for their journal. We know that financially MAME cannot replicate this. Instead, let's use this announcement to encourage colleagues who have previously had to choose between organizations to choose to become MAME members.

Looking forward, we know that we must advocate for libraries and librarians. As part of this effort, ALA and AASL are continuing to move forward with the SKILLS Act. ALA has asked the leadership of each state affiliated organization to organize a delegation to meet with Senators in their home offices while they are on holiday break. Our government relations chair Michael Pehote is working on setting up possible appointment times. If you know of parents or students that would be good additions for this delegation, please let me know ASAP.

Finally, I would like to wish each of you a happy and blessed holiday season. It has been an honor serving as President and I would like to thank each of you for your continued involvement and commitment to MAME.

Another successful MAME conference is now in our memories.  Thanks to Sue Lay and her conference committee for a job well done!  Remember that many of the handouts from the conference can be found on the MAME website.  These may be very useful to those who had trouble deciding which of several good sessions to attend as well as for those who were unable to join us in person at the conference.

As MAME continues to provide professional development resources for our members, we have been working on a new section on the MAME website related to online webinars. Both of the national / international associations that we are affiliated with (AASL and ISTE) provide opportunities for our members to participate in online webinars.  Many of those webinars are at a reduced cost for members of AASL or ISTE and some (particularly the ISTE SIGMS webinars) are free. So we have included links to both of those resources as well as updated links to other webinars that should be of interest to school librarians. These include the wonderful online training opportunities for Mel Database online classes available from MCLS. Any Michigan library staff or classroom teacher may sign up using the online system registration system. All of the MeL Databases online classes are FREE to Michigan school and library staff.
Please note that I have also included a couple of good social network / professional development sites that I know and have experienced. If you have other good sites that you would like to share with the MAME community, please send me an email.  Thanks!

Best Books of 2011
The end of the year brings lots of "Best of the Year" lists.  One of the lists that school librarians look forward to is the School Library Journal's list of best books in each December issue.  The 2011 issue with its list of the best books of the year is out!  This year's cover is by Maurice Sendak and per SLJ's annual tradition is based on the theme of stars.  You can find the online version of the SLJ List of the Best Books of 2011 here.

There are many other best of the year lists.  Below are just a few:

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has an annual list of Notable Children's Books.  You can find the 2011 ALSC list here

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has several best of the year lists.  You can find links to the "2011 Best of the Best" lists here.  Also, find the 2011 "Teen's Top Ten" here

The International Reading Association (IRA) yearly list for Children's Choices, Teacher's Choices, and Young Adult Choices can be found by following links from this page.

The Bankstreet College of Education Center for Literature forms a committee to choose the best books of the year each year.  Find their choices for 2011 here.

The New York Times list of Notable Children's Books of 2011 can be found here.
Region Corner

REMC Region MapMAME 17 had a great turn out for their event:

Weeding for Fun and Profit.
Julie Harris has put together a great summary of the event and links to resources for MAME members that are interested in the topic but were unable to make the meeting.  This summary (along with some photos!) and a great list of resources can be found here
App of the Month!

Google Translate

Free

Android, iPhone

This app by Google will translate words and phrases between 60+ languages. You can speak the word or phrase and listen to the translation or type in a word or phrase and see the translation. Google Translate is one of the good Google products that can be very helpful and useful. I can't vouch for it's accuracy but I've had a couple people tell me that it is accurate. Try it out and see for yourself if you would have a use for this app.

If you would like to suggest a app, please email your idea to: Judy Hauser, judy.hauser@oakland.k12.mi.us.

Any app will be considered whether it is for productivity, utility, or fun.

Supporting School
Libraries
Carl Harvey
Please share the article "What You Can Do to Support School Libraries in Crisis" by Carl Harvey, President of AASL.  This article is part of the Huffington Post's Libraries in Crisis Series.  What can you do to support your school library?  Carl suggests some of the following -
-"Make sure your school has a state-certified librarian."
-"Ensure that school board members and school administrators know that school libraries and school librarians are a critical part of the school ecosystem."
-"You can ask members of Congress to get involved."
Read Carl's article for the details and supporting information.

Text Complexity
Text Complexity
The new Common Core Standards for English Language Arts include a three-part model for text complexity.  Thus, in order to match a book to a reader, three factors should be taken into account:
1) Qualitative: Levels of meaning, structure, language conventionality and clarity, and knowledge demands.
2) Quantitative: Readability measures and other scores of text complexity.
3) Matching reader to text and task: Reader variables (such as motivation, knowledge and experiences) and task variables (such as purpose and the complexity generated by the task assigned and the questions posed).

More detailed information about text complexity and how it is measured can be found in
Appendix A of the ELA Common Core Standards.
