From MAME Headquarters
| Fall weather is here and the trees are showing reds and yellows and browns and burgandys. I love the coolness and feeling of change in the air. There is something exciting about this time of year for me: maybe it's the feeling of change? I'm also excited about the good lineup of keynote and regular speakers as well as the opportunity to connect with our friends and colleagues at the MAME 38 conference, Libraries@Future.Now.
The MAME conference is a chance to renew and re-energize around the important work we do with students an teachers and a chance to connect and share with others around the state who share our situations. So as I enjoy the fall weather and colors, I've been processing registrations and connecting with folks by phone and email about the conference.
One of the things that I'm excited about and want to share with you is that we have received several registrations from new MAME members, and particularly a couple of new members who work in public libraries! These dedicated public librarians are joining us because their communities either don't have school librarians, or those school librarians have been cut and students and teachers are turning to their public libraries for help. As I chatted with one of these new MAME members on the phone, I realized that in the face of these difficult times, here is a good opportunity for us: MAME has a lot to offer public librarians who work with school age children! We offer a good conference with oodles of information about books, authors, program ideas, and technology related resources specially aimed at librarians who work with children and young adults and their teachers. We also offer connections with other folks in similar situations through the Media Spectrum, the monthly newsletter, and the listserve. (For more information see the 5 Good Reasons to Join MAME webpage:
I am not at all suggesting that public librarians not join MLA and attend the MLA conference - it too, is a great place to learn, grow, and connect. But for public librarians with responsibilities for school age kids, MAME can and should be another great resource. I would guess that many public librarians would welcome the help and resources, but simply don't know anything about us.
So here are my challanges to you this month: - Send in your conference registration if you haven't already done so ...
- or ... renew your MAME membership for the upcoming year ...
- Share information about MAME with your local public librarians.
Thanks for all you do!
See you in Lansing at MAME 38:

Educational Leadership Article by Carl Harvey
|
"The Coach in the Library"
This month's (October 2011) Educational Leadership's magazine's featured topic is Coaching: the New Leadership Skill. The online extension of the print magazine contains an article by Carl. A Harvey, opening keynote speaker at MAME 38, president of AASL, and School Librarian at North Elementary School in Noblesville, IN.
Harvey compares the support and guidance that School Librarians give to teachers to the support that a coach give team members. He says, "Like coaches, an effective librarian (also called a media specialist these days) gives teachers ideas and resources for instruction, models lessons, and provides information when educators have questions." He also says, "In these hard economic times, schools must use each staff member to the fullest. School librarians have great knowledge about 21st century skills, technology, literacy, and much more. Schools should take advantage of the opportunities this knowledge store can create and run with them-for the benefit of our students."
Read the article "The Coach in the Library" here.
Editor's Note: I'm really looking forward to meeting Carl A. Harvey and hearing him speak at MAME 38. Hope to see you there!

Region Corner
|
Help shape the future and direction of MAME by becoming a region representative. We're looking for representatives to lead in their region, and serve on the MAME Board of Directors. Each region receives a budget based on regional membership that can be used to hold workshops or professional development events, or to sponsor members from the region in attending workshops. We're looking for leaders in regions 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10,15, 20, 21, & 22. Being a region rep looks good on your resume, and it's a great way to connect with and support the librarians in your area.

App of the Month!
| Below are this month's featured "apps of the month". If you would like to suggest an app, please email your idea to: Judy Hauser
judy.hauser@oakland.k12.mi.us Any app will be considered whether it is for productivity, utility, or fun!
It's conference season! To gear up for venues near or far please take a look at these two apps. One will help you find better gas prices (if there is such a thing) while driving to an event and the other will help you locate a variety of restaurants on your way and when you reach your destination. GasBuddy by gasbuddy.com Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry Free This free app uses the GPS on your phone to list local gas stations and costs. If you are one of those people (and aren't we all?!) who want to save a few cents a gallon then GasBuddy is your gas buddy. Urbanspoon
Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry Free Another free app! This one uses the GPS on your phone to locate local restaurants. Features include Browsing, Nearby (a list of local restaurants) and Shake. Shake your phone and Urbanspoon will randomly select a restaurant in your area. Results include city, food type and expense. If you don't like that selection just give your phone another shake for a different result. |

At the Ludington Lighthouse Triathlon in August, Tom Stream won his age group in the swim leg of the race. (He finished 11th of 250 overall swimmers!) Also, he was the fastest of the slow guys in his age group as well - sort of an Emperor of the Penguins! Congratulations to Tom!! _________________________________________
Pamela Cameron is now teaching 5 periods of an Inquiry and Innovation 12 week long elective class. Although she is still officially the Media Specialist at Mattawan Middle School (with about 900 students); she now has just two periods for library and prep work. Pamela is trying to make "lemonade" out of this by trying to use the AASL Standards for the 21st Century, 21st Century Partnership Skills, and the Common Core Standards. Her fall cheer is "hit them high, hit them low, go MeL, go MeL, go, go, go." Can MeL be imprinted in 12 weeks?
The description of Pamela's new class is below. This may be helpful to other MAME members who may find themselves in a similar position. The Inquiry and Innovation class is based on the skills needed to succeed as a 21st Century Learner. Students will access and evaluate information and use critical thinking and problem solving methods to propose new information and innovation. Students will be gatherers, evaluators, creators and communicators of information. Exploration of topics will require examination of multiple texts and the ability to form conclusions using relevant and accurate data and evidence. Selected units include: Inventions, Civic and Global Understandings, Natural World Interactions, Generation Interviews, Health and Nutrition, Database Searching, Webpage Annotations and Personal and Electronic Communication. Assignments and projects will involve collaboration and communication with classmates, subjects experts and classrooms from other countries. Class activities are supported with computer access for each student. Additional info: Family life and Speech and Communication Classes were discontinued, so Pamela is adding some of the important topics from those classes. _________________________________________ Due to changes in the Library of Michigan's MeL support contract, MeL Databases Librarian Kelly Bayee is leaving MCLS, and her last day was Friday, September 30. Kelly has been an excellent source of information and support for MAME members. We will certainly miss her work at MCLS and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
_________________________________________ Gigi Lincoln was thrilled to attend (for the first time) this year's National Book Festival held on the National Mall!
The Library of Congress sponsored event featured presentations by some 100 authors including David McCullough, Toni Morrison, Russell Banks, Terry McMillan, and Garrison Keillor. Sarah Dessen (ever-popular YA author) has a new fiction title set in the town of 'Lakeview.' She signed a copy for Lakeview High School Library!_________________________________________

NCTE President Supports Libraries
|
NCTE President, Yvonne Siu-Runyan wrote an article in September's NCTE Council Chronicle supporting school and public libraries. Yvonne sites many statistics and research in her article, such as: In a Scholastic & Gates Foundation study, "83% of all students said they got their books from school libraries". The aspects of the school library that relate to reading achievement include "the size of the collection, the presence of a credentialed librarian, and overall staffing." Yvonne concluded her article with the statement "Library funding should be expanded, not cut." Thanks to the NCTE President for supporting and speaking out for libraries and librarians!
