From the President
| June is busting out all over. Like the Rodgers and Hammerstein song says, you can feel the change in the air signaling that once again another school year is over. The air is warmer, the students are restless and the calendar explodes with activities, from field trips to graduations. It can be an exhausting time of year, but it's also an exhilarating time as we reflect on school accomplishments. I like to use this time of year to reflect on my programs and instruction. What did I do this year? What still needs improvement? How can I better address this issue? How can I better serve my students and staff? What is ready to be weeded out or retired? Summer gives us the time to think about these answers that we don't always have in the midst of the school year. It also allows us to seek out professional opportunities that will help us address some of these issues. I'm looking forward to a few of these opportunities this summer, especially two of interest to MAME members. First, I'll be attending the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans at the end of the month. There is nothing quite like the energy of a national conference to gather inspiration. I'm looking forward to learning from other leaders, meeting new authors, and buying way too many books. I will also be attending our Affiliate Assembly sessions with Sue Lay. These sessions are always informative as we learn about issues from around the country. Second, I hope to see many of you at our MAME summer institute. I'm very excited about this summer's topic- Tools for Standards Implementation. We will be utilizing tools that help us address both AASL Learning for Life (L4L) and Common Core standards. I believe this is going to be a great day of learning that I can put to use right away in my district. I hope that many of you will join us. Finally, as June busts out, it is a reminder to take some time to relax. From gardening, to enjoying our Michigan waterways, to simply relishing those summer reads, I hope that you find something this summer that refreshes your soul. Thanks for all you do!

Summer is almost here, and along with the long days and warm temperatures, we have new opportunities for growth and rejuvenation. There are several good opportunities coming up this summer for MAME members for professional growth, networking, and advocacy action.
First, there is the MAME Summer Institute, to be held on July 12, 20011 at the Ingham ISD. Krisitin Fontichiaro will be leading a team helping us to Learn about AASL's standards, Learning4Life (L4L), and how they relate to the new Common Core Standards. Our day will focus on AASL's Building Level Toolkit: Implementing AASL's Learning Standards and Program Guidelines in Your School Library. More information can be found elsewhere in this newsletter and on the MAME website.
A second great opportunity is the American Library Association's (ALA) Annual Conference in June 23-28, 2011 / Ernest N. Morial Convention Center / New Orleans, Louisiana. There are a number of sessions designed for school librarians and hosted by the AASL. Several leaders of MAME will be in attendance. Information can be found here.
The third big opportunity is the annual conference of the International Society for Technology in Eudcation (ISTE) held from June 26-29, 2011 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. ISTE's Special Interest Group for Media Specialists has a number of fun and rewarding events specially designed for school librarians and again several MAME folks will be there along with many of our MACUL colleagues. Information can be found here:
http://www.iste.org/conference.aspx.
We are also still looking for speakers for the MAME 38: Libraries@ Future.Now. Speaker and roundtable presenter application can be found on the MAME website here:
http://www.mimame.org/annual-conference.html
There is also new information there about the conference in general and the keynote speakers in particular.
Have a great summer!

This month we will look at two apps which can be used for research. You can play with these apps over the summer and introduce them to students in the fall. If you would like to suggest an app, please email your idea to judy.hauser@oakland.k12.mi.us. Any app will be considered whether it is for productivity, utility or fun!
EasyBib iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch Free Everyone knows about EasyBib and now EB has gone mobile! Enter the title of a book and if EasyBib finds it it is displayed. Then choose MLA, APA or Chicago for a citation format. You can add, manage (delete) and email citations. Now we need this for Android and Blackberry!
Gale Access My Library App iPhone, Android
