I recently saw a poster that intrigued me.  The poster was made to look like a vision chart, but instead of the usual E's, T's, & P's, it spelled out,

"Always look on the bright side."

As budget cuts continue to effect our districts and state, some days it feels harder and harder to look on the bright side.  However, some good things are happening and recognizing them can help us each go forward as we continue to adapt and do our best to survive.

One of these recent highlights was the AASL Region 3 Affiliate Meeting, held April 29-May 1.  This year, Michigan had the privilege of hosting.  Delegates from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin all gathered in Holland for a beautiful weekend.  The tulips had just begun to bloom and we had a wonderful time together.  A big thank you to Past President Lynn Gordon, who helped with many of the arrangements, and to Tim and Nancy Staal, who opened their beautiful historic home to us on Saturday evening.

While there is a great amount of pleasure at these annual meetings, we actually convene to work on AASL Affiliate Business.  The primary task of the weekend is developing concerns and commendations that will be taken to the entire Affiliate Assembly at our meetings during ALA annual conference.  The concerns and commendations process is a formal process that is detailed on the Affiliate Assembly page of the AASL website.  This year, we are sending four concerns:

  1. Development a toolkit for school librarians who serve multiple age groups or an excessive amount of students with no assistance.
  2. Development of a statement regarding school librarians and the RTI process.
  3. Requesting AASL to ask NCES to ask expanded questions about school libraries and their related staffing on their annual survey of schools.
  4. Development of a toolkit and a possible incentive for the state organization hosting the AASL conference.
We are also sending forth one commendation:
  1. We would like to commend Nancy Everhard for her efforts to visit every state with her vision tour.
The weekend also included sharing from the delegates about things that are happening in our states.  The economic picture continues to be grim for many of us, but we are continuing to press on and celebrate the successes that we can.

On a different not, MAME has two positions that have opened on the Board of Directors.  The first is editor of Media Spectrum.  If you have wanted to try your hand at editing and layout, this may be a perfect opportunity.  There are some specific software requirements, please contact Tim Staal or myself for more information.  We are also seeking a Marketing Chairperson.  This person is responsible for sharing information about MAME.  Again, you may contact Tim or myself for more information.  I would also like to express thanks to Sue Hornbach and Nancy Larsen for their many hours of service in these positions.  Volunteers like Sue and Nancy empower MAME and help us all together look on the bright side.

Thanks for all you do!

Rachel Markel, MAME President

Summer is almost here, and along with the long days and warm temperatures, we have new opportunities for growth and rejuvenation. There are several good opportunities coming up this summer for MAME members for professional growth, networking, and advocacy action.

First, there is the MAME Summer Institute, to be held on July 12, 20011 at the Ingham ISD.  Krisitin Fontichiaro will be leading a team helping us to Learn about AASL's standards, Learning4Life (L4L), and how they relate to the new Common Core Standards.  Our day will focus on AASL's Building Level Toolkit: Implementing AASL's Learning Standards and Program Guidelines in Your School Library. More information can be found elsewhere in this newsletter and on the MAME website.

A second great opportunity is the American Library Association's (ALA) Annual Conference in June 23-28, 2011 / Ernest N. Morial Convention Center / New Orleans, Louisiana. There are a number of sessions designed for school librarians and hosted by the AASL. Several leaders of MAME will be in attendance. Information can be found here.

The third big opportunity is the annual conference of the International Society for Technology in Eudcation (ISTE) held from June 26-29, 2011 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. ISTE's Special Interest Group for Media Specialists has a number of fun and rewarding events specially designed for school librarians and again several MAME folks will be there along with many of our MACUL colleagues. Information can be found here:

http://www.iste.org/conference.aspx.

There is also still time to submit a proposal to present at the 2011 Michigan Joint Education Conference, held at Coopersville High School on June 22.  See more information about the conference at:  www.mijec.org.

In addition to taking time for personal and professional growth, I urge all of you to think about how you can advocate for schools and school librarians, both here in Michigan, and in the country as a whole.  Its not too late to call, write, or email your state and national legislators and urge them to find ways to properly fund schools and libraries, school libraries, and school technology.

Teri WeddingTeri Terry married Gary Belcher on April 8th.  Teri reports that it was a very relaxed ceremony in the courtroom with a Class of 70 (their grad year) member officiating the service.Teri's  baby brother stood up with Gary and her best friend in high school stood up with her. All of their children were able to be there except Teri's youngest and his fiance.

Teri says "We were blessed to be surrounded with love and laughter.  After the service, we went to the matron of honor's house and she and her husband had a fabulous dinner for all of us. She is a baker, and made us a wedding cake shaped like hearts and covered with Harley signs. It was a perfect and relaxing day and now we are just continuing to enjoy our lives together."  ___________________________________________________

Judy HauserJudy Hauser, informational media consultant for Oakland Schools, along with Lynn Lieberman, presented at a Social Networking Parent Forum in April.  At the forum Judy talked about social media and online safety for students.  The Observer & Eccentric published an article about the forum which you can read here.

Derby MS recently had a mini-tech day (professional development) which was a huge success.  Judy Hauser presented two sessions, one on research and the other about new technologies.  Both were a huge success and well received.  Many gave Judy kudos by name in the evaluations.  Way to go Judy!
