MAME Leadership Conference March 6-7 |
SUPERSIZE YOU: Growing Your Media Program with AASL Standards and Guidelines 2.0 We are honored to have with us some familiar MAME faces who are deeply involved in the new AASL Standards. Marcia Mardis, Ed.D., Assistant Professor at Florida State University, College of Information, one of the authors of the AASL Standards, has presented at MAME conferences for many years. She is a mover and a shaker with an award to prove it. Kristin Fontichiaro, K-5 Media Specialist for Birmingham Public Schools, Adjunct Lecturer at University of Michigan, School of Information, and one of the authors of the AASL Standards Guidelines, has also presented several times for MAME and has written several books that will help us to integrate technology into all curricula, and have fun doing it. We are fortunate to have speakers directly involved in the creation of the new standards. They know the reasoning behind everything that has been done. We'll have the tools you need to get going...it really is a paradigm shift that we need to make: ● If you have been struggling because the new standards seem so different from the old standards, you need to be here. ● If you haven't had time to get your head into the new standards because of the busy-ness of your daily library life, you need to be here. ● If you have been trying to utilize them but have questions, you need to be here. ● If you have been trying some successful activities with them, you need to be here to share. ● If you feel out of the loop, like you don't have a clue, you have a clue but that's it...you need to be here! Come and spend time with your MAME friends. You know you enjoy them! Who else understands what you do? Who else makes you laugh more? You will have new ideas, new energy, and new plans to get underway. Come and get SUPERSIZED!!! ...... Jo Kirkbride, Conference Chair |
| MAME Video Receives National Press |
 |
|
MAME's "Twenty-first Century Media Center" video has been in the spotlight nationally following a press release issued in January by State Librarian Nancy Robertson. The video was mentioned in the Jan 28 ALA Newsletter and in School Library Journal Online.
Mike Maison, producer of the video, has received a request from a Wisconsin school district to air the video on the local educational access cable channel.
The video, a collaborative effort of MAME and the Library of Michigan, began with a brainstorming session in August 2005, attended by several MAME members and Nancy Robertson and Sheryl Mase of Library of Michigan.
The video features a cast of characters, from Algonac High School media specialist Rachelle Wynkoop, assorted parents, teachers, students and administrators, to Nancy Robertson and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Michael Flanagan.
The project came to fruition with the assistance of Mike Maison of St. Clair ISD, who agreed to produce the video on his own time and at no charge.
Mike was recognized with the President's Award at the fall Conference for his heroic efforts in service to MAME.
Be sure to make use of this powerful resource and the accompanying toolkit for presentations to your adminstrators, PTA's and school boards. You have the tools to convince decision-makers that strong media programs are essential for the twenty-first century learner! |
| TOOLKIT available on MAME website! |
 |
|
A toolkit to complement the 21st Century Media Center Video is now available online. The new toolkit button is on the MAME website under the video download site button on the righthand side of the page. If you are presenting the video to any of your stakeholder groups you can access the toolkit infromation to help you prepare.
Thanks to Judy Hauser for putting this great resource together! |

From Cindy Dobrez in West Ottawa:
Last week an 8th grade boy came to check out Hunger Games (by Suzanne Collins), saying he was so happy to find one available. We have 5-6 copies so I asked if he'd already read it since he seemed to be so familiar with it and since so many kids are rereading it. He said, "No. We bought a copy but my dad has it and won't give it up and I can't wait." I thought of them all weekend, father and son, sharing their opinions on a book they were both thrilled to read. It was a joyous feeling. |

| MAME member makes news! |

Maureen Watson, media specialist at Norup International School in the Berkley School District, was featured in a story both in the local newspaper and in a televised report in the Ukraine.
Maureen took part in an exchange program last summer, travelling to Korvel, Ukraine, to teach technology to English teachers from across the Ukraine.
The video from the televised report is posted on YouTube:
You'll pick up a few words, like "computer", "Americanski", and "biblioteca"--but the scene of Maureen doing her thing with the Ukranian teachers needs no translation! |
