| News from the President:
Kathleen McBroom |
Hello, Everyone, and welcome to 2009! As with every new year, MAME has a new president, and I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am currently the Teacher Leader for Library Media for the Dearborn Public Schools, and I am also an adjunct instructor with the Wayne State Library Media Program. Prior to coming over to my central office position I was the media specialist at Fordson High School for thirteen years. Although I've been with Dearborn for over twenty years, my actual library career spans over thirty, and includes stints as an academic librarian (the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Lawrence Technological University in Southfield) and a public librarian (the Baldwin Library in Birmingham and the Lansing Public Library, which is no longer in existence). My original plan was to dust off my teaching degree and work as a media specialist just long enough to see my own children through school, but I unexpectedly fell in love with the K-12 experience, and expect to stay here for the rest of my career. My goals for MAME for the coming year center around building recognition and respect for library media specialists as equal partners in the educational process. We need to enhance our presence and extend our influence. I hope MAME will take a leadership role in helping media specialists, classroom teachers, and entire districts interpret and implement new learning standards and content expectations. I hope to see MAME sponsor extended professional learning opportunities for our members. Most importantly, I hope to see MAME reach out and become more involved with other state and national professional organizations, uniting in our efforts to educate children. On the personal side, as I previously mentioned, my own children are far beyond the K-12 level. My daughter, Kerry, is in law school in Washington, DC, and my son, Michael, will start law school in the fall. My husband Alan and I hunker down in Beverly Hills, and enjoy watching the kids and their friends stampede through our home on school breaks. So onward to the new year! We face considerable challenges and unrelenting change, but we must remain steadfast and focused. We know that we make profound differences in children's lives. It's time we let everyone else know, too! ......Kathleen McBroom |
| MAME Members Make News! |
| Two Battle Creek media specialists made news in December.
Dr. Margaret (Gigi) Lincoln, Lakeview High School, was one of ten librarians nationwide named as winners of the Carnegie Corporation/New York Times "I Love my Librarian" Award. The award recognizes the winners' service to their communities, schools and campuses.
The awards were presented at a ceremony and reception December 9 in New York. Each winner received a $5000 cash award.
In addition to her work at Lakeview High School, Gigi teaches online courses through San Diego State University. Many MAME members know Gigi from the Holocaust education programs that she has brought to Battle Creek; and from her frequent helpful and informative posts to mamelist. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Gigi!
Jara Sutton, Harper Creek High School, Battle Creek, was featured in a story in the Battle Creek Enquirer, describing her support for the one book, one community program sponsored by the Willard Library in Battle Creek. Way to go, Jara! |
