Winter Conference features  Dr. Blanche Woolls

Looking for tools to sharpen your leadership skills?  Join your MAME colleagues the last weekend in March for a session with one of the country's foremost educators of school library professionals. Dr. Woolls began her career as a school librarian in Hammond, Indiana.
She is author of many books, several of which were co-authored by David Loertcher. She is a past president of AASL and IASL, and currently Professor Emeritus at San Jose State University.

A conversation with Nancy Larsen,  new VP of Continuing Education

Nancy Larsen
Nancy Larsen was recently appointed to fill the position of Vice President of Regions, upon the resignation of Clark Heath.  She has courageously agreed to step into Clark's very big shoes!

How long have you been a MAME  member?  Is this your first "job" for MAME, or have you been active in another role?

I have been a MAME member since 1995 when I moved here from New York. I served on the strategic planning committee this year and on the conference committee.

Could you tell us a little bit about your current position?

I'm the media specialist at CHS. I work closely with teachers to teach the research process so that our students can be successful at the college level. I teach information literacy skills whenever the teachers provide me the opportunity to do so. I encourage our students to read for enjoyment.

Where you are from?  Grew up?  Went to school?

I was born in Rome, NY (geographic center of NYS) and attended school in Oriskany, NY. (a major battle of the Revolutionary War was fought there, although folks from other areas just don't appreciate how major it was). I have a B.A. in Art History from SUNY Potsdam, M.L.S. from SUNY Albany, M.S.Ed. from UW-Whitewater, and Ph.D. from Oakland University.

What you like to do when you're not in a library?

I love to take long fast walks with my friend Joanne Steckling. I read (just about anything), take a keen interest in history and world affairs, enjoy traveling, and most of all, delight in spending time with my family.

Something about you that might surprise people?

It might surprise others that I have lived in NYS, NJ, WI, CA, MI, and in England. With the exception of England, I worked as a library media specialist in all of those places, and at all levels, grades K-12.

Thank you for serving on MAME's Executive Committee, Nancy!
MAME Advocates for you...

MAME Executive Director Roger Ashley and State Librarian Nancy Robertson will be meeting with the executive directors of several state organizatons of school administrators to discuss the need for school media programs and professional personnel. They will be introducing the materials that are being prepared to promote school media programs.
Archives Moving
MAME's archives, so carefully organized by historian Dawn Humphreys and her committee, will soon be housed in the Bentley Historical Library in Ann Arbor. Early records of school library and audio-visual organizations are already contained in the Bentley's diverse collection. All MAME records up to 2000 will be moved in print format. Archival materials from 2000 on will remain at Michigan Library Consortium where we will begin the process of digitization.
