 MAME's Booktalking Bloggers

Dobrez&Rutan

Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan, MAME's popular booktalking duo, have launched "Bookends," a blog a la Siskel and Ebert, with their unique perpectives on
YA titles.  Only a month into the project, the blog is already generating a buzz in the online world of young adult literature.  Visit Lynn and Cindy online at

News from Michigan Media Centers

Here's a sampling  of what went on in media centers all across Michigan during the past spooky Halloween month....

"For a different kind of Halloween read-aloud, we scanned several pages from Mary Ann Hoberman's You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: very short scary tales to read together (Little, Brown & Co. 2007) into a PowerPoint presentation which was projected onto the big screen in the library.  Third graders took turns reading the stories in two voices, i.e. boys v. girls, short-sleeves v. long-sleeves, ponytails v. hair down, etc.  The kids loved this new way to "read" and the larger than book-sized pictures."

"A bulletin board modeled after Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater.  Mine read PETER, PETER! PUMPKIN READER.  Board was covered in yellow, with leaves for border and pumpkins strategically placed on the board and around the pumpkin reader."

Media Specialist and Darrin Shan Save Girl from Detentions
"We set up a little display for Halloween using our Darrin Shan books.  Even though it's not "great" literature, they have been flying off the shelves and kids in all grades are devouring them and asking for more.  I even had one extremely vociferous girl say "I am on number 4.  I like reading these because I get in trouble a lot less in class now and I got in trouble A LOT before!"  I am so pleased that we could save her from infinite detentions this fall!"
 Sarah Savage
Almont Middle School

Clarkston HS Display
"Got a monster of an information problem?
Use the Big 6 to let it R.I.P."
Haloween-theme bulletin board at Clarkston High School.

Twilight
"At Derby Middle School in Birmingham we made a bulletin board, featuring the popular Twilight book, using the ALA Poster.  Girls and boys have been standing in front of it discussing the characters and the awaited arrival of the movie!"
Sue Taylor, Media Specialist

Letter to the Editor

Re: Announcement of new Grand Rapids media centers opening with no professional staffing.

"Sorry to be a crab, but a "dynamic citizen" getting new media centers going in Grand Rapids is not in the interest of students or the schools involved. Grand Rapids has no elementary or middle school media specialists! We should be contacting Grand Rapids and saying, "Why?"
Thanks for letting me steam! "
Pamela Cameron, Library Media Specialist Mattawan Middle School
