I keep finding myself saying things like -  "Where has the time gone?" - "It's almost June!?" -  "My workshop is tomorrow?" -  "It's already Friday!?"  - "Fritz, quit barking at me!" (nothing to do with MAME but I seem to say it a lot). For most of our MAME members the summer and that blissful time off is fast approaching.  I thought that I would give you a brief behind-the-scenes look at what the MAME Executive Committee, Board and Conference Committee are working on right now. Let me add that I cannot believe how fast time flies by when one is the MAME President!
I made some personal goals for myself for my year as President and I'm stressing out a bit looking at my list but hopeful that I will make it. Also, I work with so many great MAME members that accomplishments are always just around the corner but I still feel that I have to get certain things done on my watch and that they are my responsibility. When I'm driving somewhere and using my Tom Tom One GPS "Richard" lets me know when I'm successful by announcing "You have reached your destination!" complete with a graphic of a finish line.  If only we could all have that instant affirmation and feeling of success in everything we do in a day.
First, let me start with what we have already accomplished this year. MAME Interactive (MI) is up and running on the MAME website. Mike Chmura worked very hard to get this resource on the website and it looks great. We don't want to inundate you with resources or duplicate other great sites but this is the place to go for some pertinent links to online courses, lesson plans, blogs, wikis and regional websites.
The MAME Executive Committee has a budget in place and is also working on getting a ballot of candidates ready to send to members. You will see a great slate of candidates in your mailbox soon. Sorry, no superdelegates allowed in this vote!

The MAME 35 Conference Wiki is already getting populated with information. Kathleen McBroom, MAME VP and MAME 35 Conference Chair, and her excellent committee are working hard to present this outstanding PD event. Of course, the updating of the conference wiki is ongoing as events are arranged and new information comes to light. Check the site often and don't hesitate to subscribe via RSS so that you will be notified as soon as new information is available on the wiki.

The MAME Executive Committee and Board members continue to work on MAME's strategic plan. We have accomplished some of our goals and continue to work on others. Thanks to Cyndi Phillip and Dee Gwaltney for facilitating our planning meetings.
In March Marsha Lambert organized an excellent Spring Leadership Conference in Ypsilanti. Blanche Woolls, Marcia Mardis and Kristin Fontichiaro facilitated the discussions and you can see the fruits of our labor on the MAME Leadership Wiki. You will find some very helpful documents.
A survey on Michigan school library media centers and personnel has been taken on by MAME members Lisa Brakel, Jo Kirkbride and Roger Ashley. Hopefully we will have results to share later in the year.
The media center marketing video is nearly finished! This video, the brainchild of Nancy Robertson our State Librarian, is a collaborative project involving the LOM, MAME and other media specialists and ISD staff members. I can tell you this - the video looks great so far and will get the school library media message across in a short amount of time. As soon as the video is finished and launched the members of the project want administrators, teachers, parents and legislators to see it. We will need your help in disseminating the video but more about that later in the year.
On July 15th the MAME Summer Institute takes place at the Ingham ISD in Mason. Evelyn Freeman has organized a wonderful slate of presenters. Topics include AASL standards for the 21st century learner, Michigan state standards, integrating technology to meet standards, gaming and the curriculum, open source software and Web 2.0 tools for standards implementation. Watch for the bright yellow flyer in the mail.
Chris Cooper, MAME Parliamentarian, has been working with Roger and me on our policies and Constitution. We will be voting on changes at the General Membership meeting that takes place at the annual conference.
One last thing. Committee and Board members continue to offer ways to help Michigan media specialists and other educators attend our professional development. Last year we offered discounted earlybird registration and vendor scholarships for the annual conference. This year we will again offer the earlybird registration along with even more vendor scholarships than last year. In addition, watch for team discounts.
The MAME members who volunteer to be on the committees and the Board work hard and meet four or five times a year (on Saturdays!) to provide PD, resources and support to MAME members. These meetings, with a small percentage of MAME members, collaborate and brainstorm to make MAME great.
I hope to see you in July. Have a great summer. I hope you get to read mountains of books, sleep till the crack of noon, watch silly movies and maybe travel to exotic locales or as far as $4.00 a gallon will get you. Thank you for being part of MAME!

What's Going on in Michigan Media Centers?

Legacy Library - East Grand Rapids

At East Grand Rapids High School, we are starting a Legacy Library.  Parents, grandparents, or really anyone can honor a student by donating a minimum of $18 and selecting a subject area or specific title.  The book will have a bookplate indicating in whose honor the book is placed in the library.

Round Reader Recommendations
Students  select a book that they've read and using a template they "recommend" the book to other students in the school. Besides title and author, students include call number and Accelerated Reader level as well as their favorite part of the book.  Older students enjoy looking back at books they've recommended in the past.  It's a good source for the student who says he or she "can't find a good book" to read.
I divide the results into three notebooks: Nonfiction, Everbody (picture books) and chapter fiction.  Fourth grade students have started adding their recommendations as power point handouts. It's an added incentive to do one final recommendation and a good power point introduction.  It also gives us something to share when we are know longer checking out books. First grade students draw a picture from their recommended book and then add a recommendation.
We all enjoy this opportunity at evaluation and sharing our favorite books.

A  Camel?  - Grand Haven
Grand Haven PS did a fundraiser for Kenya's Camel Bookmobile program. We had kids and staff donate loose change throughout the month. With the cost of a camel being $350 presently, enough was donated to purchase about 5.5 camels (over $1900.00).

Author Visit/Week of Reading Stars - Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills
Cranbrook Schools Brookside (PreK-5) hosted author/illustrator Janie Bynum on May 12.  She read selections from her book Altoona Baboona and from Lisa Wheeler's Porcupining which she illustrated.  Then Janie demonstrated how she produces digital illustrations with a drawing tablet attached to her computer.  She solicited suggestions for body parts from various animals and created imaginary creatures for each grade level.  Needless to say, the kids loved her work!

Once book circulation stops in mid-May we run a program called "Week of Reading Stars".  Faculty, parents and special people from the community are invited into the Brookside Library to share their favorite books with our library classes.  The "star" also talks about how reading is important in their life, personally and professionally.  Some of our biggest hits have been:  kitchen & custodial staff, faculty spouses, and the bicycle officers from Birmingham Police Dept.  We print their name on a glittery foam-core star cut-out and display the stars on the library walls.  This is a fun community sharing event.

Spies and Spiced-Up Booktalks
  - Otsego
Besides ordering and doing inventory at Otsego Middle School, I have been busy still with research projects and teaching Internet Safety to 6th and 7th graders. But I have done something fun. Sparked by a reading list I saw on the adlit.org (Adolescent Literacy site), I prepared a little fun spy movie trivia quiz on PowerPoint complete with 53 seconds of the Mission Impossible theme bought from ITunes titled Spies Like Us. Then, book talked the spy stories we have in the media center, both fiction and non-fiction. I also bought 3 new books to spice things up- Secrets, Lies, Gizmos and Spies (non-fiction), Silver Fin (Young Bond series), and If I Tell You I Love You, I'd Have To Kill You (Chick Lit meets Spy Story)

Michigan Congressman Vern Ehlers recognized for Advocacy for Libraries
Ehlers and Ashley
Rep. Ehlers, Elaine Logan, Roger Ashley

Representative Vern Ehlers of Grand Rapids, 3rd Congressional District of Michigan, was recently awarded the 2008 Public Service Award by FOLUSA (Friends of Libraries USA).

FOLUSA commended Ehler's tireless work in support of public and school libraries. Most recently, he was an original co-sponsor of the SKILLs Act, (Strengthening Kids' Interest in Learning and Libraries), which would require schools to hire state-certified school librarians, and would require adequate funding for materials.

Mr Ehlers was honored at a reception in the Dirksen Senate Building attended by about 400 library advocates and congressional aides.

Roger Ashley, MAME Executive Director  presented Congressman Ehlers with a plaque from MAME in appreciation of his advocacy for school media programs.

Pictured above with Congressman Ehlers are Library of Michigan Board Chair Elaine Logan and Roger Ashley.
