News from President Judy Hauser
Judy Hauser

Last month I attended the Computers in Libraries/Internet@Schools Conference in Arlington, Virginia. I attended some sessions on the CIL side and some on the I@S side. I am taking this opportunity to share some conference information with all of you.

Do you pecha kucha? It's not a disease or a food item or an exotic animal. It is a fast-paced presentation format. First of all, pecha kucha (peh-chak-cha) is a Japanese term for the sound made when talking kind of like our term "chit chat." For more history on pecha kucha check out the Wikipedia entry (did I just hear some blood boiling?!).

The pecha kucha format is 20 x 20 or 20 slides/images x 20 seconds per slide/image = a 6 minute and 40 second presentation. I watched a panel of well-known library tech bloggers present topics in this format. It was fast, fun and you still got the flavor of the topic. A timekeeper went to the next slide on each 20-second mark. Sometimes the presenter was ready and sometimes not. I'm bringing this up because it is a new way to present a topic in a short amount of time at staff meetings and professional development days. This format may also bring some fun to a dry meeting or topic. You don't always need 30 minutes or two hours to present something and get your point across. Check out this CIL/I@S video or Dan Pink's video to see pecha kucha in action.

I also attended a good session by Mary Ellen Bates. Her topic was how to be a super searcher and she showed several examples of good websites. These sites could be used by students and may even sway them away from a plain old Google search (although some of these sites are Google sites). I've selected some of Mary Ellen's recommended sites below:

Doubletrust - Compares results from Google and yahoo. You can set preferences for one site or the other.

Factbites - Displays results as a factual sentence from the source. It's a different way of looking at results.

Nationmaster - Provides national statistics and graphical information.

Textrunner - Looks for assertions. A very different way of looking at search results.

Searchmash - Results are sorted by type: blog, video, etc. Google but not branded.

Google's Timelines - Searches news archives for articles.

I hope that this information is helpful. I think it's good to know about a new way to make presentations. Maybe you could suggest a Pecha Kucha meeting or PD day so that several topics can be presented and everyone can learn and have fun (and participate). Anyone can spend 6 minutes and 40 seconds on some topic of interest!

It's always good to review search sites too. Many of us have a tendency to stick to one search engine - just like students! I hope the sites I mentioned above give you some new ideas on how to search for information and to share new searching techniques with students.

Spring Leadership
Follow-Up

One of the goal of the MAME Spring Leadership Conference in March involved providing support and encouragement to one another as we face the challenges which abound in today's school library media climate.  Blanche Woolls, our dynamic speaker from California, and our marvelous Michigan facilitators Marcia Mardis and Kristin Fontichiaro led discussions but also gave us some homework!  Please visit the wiki at http://mameleadership2008.pbwiki.com

Special thanks to our MAME President, Judy Hauser for settin up the wiki and to Kristin Fontichiaro for populating it. Leadership Conference participants--remember your homework!  If you were unable to attend the Leadership Conference, please dive in anyway and share your thought with the group.  We would like to to be a chance for you to become Web 2.0 active in a meaningful forum!

MAME 35: Just the facts: Using Data
MAME 35 Logo
I know we're all currently consumed with May flowers, but please take some time to focus on fall. Mark your calendars now for November 5th, 6th, and 7th!  Start talking to your principals and administrators! MAME 35, our annual conference, will be here before you know it, and you don't want to miss out!

Our conference committee has been hard at work putting together an amazing array of speaker, hands-on workshops, exhibits, author presentations, technology and literacy sessions, and special events.  A range of exhibitors will be available to demonstrate their products and share latest developments.  SB-CEU's will be offered, both for pre-conference and genteral conference sessions.  Not only will you benefit from these best practice learning opportunities, but you'll also have the chance to experience them with colleagues from media centers across the state.  You'll have access to a wealth of real-world wisdom, experience, and advice!

We're bringing in nationally-known speakers to address this year's theme: "Using Data."
Dr. Ross Todd will speak about evidence-based practice: How do we prove we make a profound difference in student learning?  Dr. Marcia Mardis and Kristin Fontichiaro will review Standards for the 21st Century Learner: How do we prove our library media programs are vital for preparing students for their evolving futures?  Michael Sullivan will share his strategies for getting guys to read: How do we prove we're meeting the needs of al of our students?  Additionally, our featured breakfast author will be Printz and two-time Newbery Honor Medalist, Gary Schmidt.

We're trying some new things this years, such as the MAME Conference Buddy Program.  If you're coming to your first conference, or coming by yourself, we'll find you a partner to share the experience with before, during and afterwards.  We instituted Vendor Scholarships last years, and will offer even more this year.  We're also reviving a tradition from long ago--Regional baskets that will be auctioned off during Thursday night's Awards Gala.

We all know the economy is in the doldrums, that gas prices continue to rise, and that there's more and more competition for dwindling school funds.  You may have heard some people asking how they can possibly affort to attend MAME.  A better question might be--how can they possibly affort not?  Think of the breadth and depth of offerings, the choices and chances for learning something new, and the prospect of new colleagues and friends!  These are the kinds of things that we all need to encourage and inspire us, and these are exactly the kinds of things you'll find at MAME.
And that's a fact!!
Weeding Makes the Paper!
Susan McCaffrey and Harry Coffill in East Grand Rapids are featured in an article about weeding, of al things!  The article is filled with great support for that well-loved task amongst librarians.
heck it out!
