New School Year Brings New Teachers

We can all remember the first day of school. We were happy to see our friends again, sit in a new classroom, and meet our new teacher. Our new notebooks, sharpened pencils, fresh paper and other supplies made the "new beginning" of the school year feel special.

As a kid, I never thought about what the teacher was going through as he/she prepared to teach a room full of energetic students. I figured the teacher just showed up, opened the door, turned on the lights, told us where to sit, and started teaching. It never occurred to me the teacher might be just as excited, anxious, and "keyed up" as I was!

I had the pleasure of attending Hillsborough County Public Schools' annual New Teacher Orientation at Strawberry Crest High School. The auditorium was packed with new teachers, their peer mentor teachers (thanks to the Empowering Effective Teachers grant), and school district personnel. Our Foundation staff was on hand for all four days to support the event. What a bright, learned, and good looking group of teachers! They are thrilled about the opportunity to teach and to impact the lives of school children, and excited about the new school year!

Our school system is a partnership of teachers, support personnel, administration and our community. Our Foundation plays an important role as the number one advocate for our public schools. We congratulate our new teachers and administrators as they begin a new school year. We wish them the very best and pledge our support.

Voter's Guide

Read about your School Board candidates

We believe that assuring the highest quality education for our public school students is a collaborative effort. Integral to this goal is selecting our School Board members.

To help voters prepare for this fall's election, we have developed the 2012 Voter's Guide to candidates for the School Board. We hope you will find this guide useful in helping you make an informed voting decision. Read about our District 1, 3, 5 and 7 school board candidates. The guide has biographical information on the candidates, as well as their position on education issues. You can download a copy of the Voter's Guide on our home page at www.educationfoundation.com.

Early voting in Hillsborough County runs from July 30-August 11. The general election is August 14.

Teachers: Thanks for Giving

Our teachers are awesome! We had 162 teachers sign up for the Faculty & Staff Educational Giving Campaign during New Teacher Orientation at Strawberry Crest High School. Hillsborough County teachers and school district staff can help support our school enrichment and scholarship programs by donating via payroll deduction to the Foundation. Thank you to our faculty and staff members for your generous support of education in Hillsborough County!

Welcome, AmeriCorps*VISTA Members

We are excited about our three AmeriCorps*VISTA Members joining the team at the Foundation in August. AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty. Members commit to serving at a nonprofit for one year.

Franchesca Conde, Julia Carter and Crystal Carpenter will serve at the Foundation for a year starting August 13. Conde and Carter will be serving with the Take Stock in Children program as a mentor specialist and student support specialist, respectively, and Carpenter will be serving with the Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools program.

All three will help recruit volunteers, make presentations in schools and throughout the community, and help support our efforts to make a difference in the lives of Hillsborough County public school children.
Welcome aboard!
