Help Us Change the World, One Student at a Time
We'd Love to Hear Your Ideas
The Hillsborough Education Foundation has a 25-year history of having significant impact on the lives of public school children in Hillsborough County. Through its programs for students and teachers more than $80 million has been given to scholarships, Career and Technical Education programs for students, teacher recognition and support, and school supplies for at-risk students through our Tea ching Tools program. The Foundation is one of the largest in Florida and has just been rated as the fourth best in the nation, using eight different statistical metrics to measure success and impact on public school students.
It is an honor to have been selected as the new President of the Hillsborough Education Foundation. It will be an exciting challenge to continue the creativity and momentum of the Foundation with all of its many important and successful programs for student and teachers.
As we enter the second 25 years of our history we will be developing a new strategic plan for the Foundation. We will be looking for the input of ideas and inspiration to plan our future. In the next several months our strategic visioning committee will meet with groups of teachers, principals, school district personnel, students and various community and business leaders to chart our new course.
Our new vision statement is a good one: "Hillsborough County will be recognized for its excellent public schools and as a community committed to having every one of its students succeed. The Foundation's new mission statement is also important: "To engage business and community partners in the support of Hillsborough County Public Schools and the academic achievement of all its students."
How we accomplish this mission and vision is where we would like your input to the strategic vision committee. What are your dreams for our students and teachers in Hillsborough County Public Schools? If you have ideas, please send them along to me at HEFPresident@educationfoundation.com. I will pass them on to the committee. If you would like to volunteer for one of our focus groups composed of teachers, principal, school district personnel, students, business leaders and/or community members, let me know. Please join with me and the Foundation in changing our world, one student at a time.
B. Philip Jones, Jr. President

Prep for Success
Career Center Students Learn about Options Beyond the Classroom
Samuel, a student at Bowers-Whitley Career Canter in Tampa, likes to cook and intends to make a career of his culinary talents. Currently working in a restaurant, Samuel wants to become a chef and operate his own restaurant in the future. After attending the Prep for Success workshop at his school, Samuel learned about going to college and earning a scholarship to pursue his culinary career .
Prep for Success, sponsored by Bank of America, is a series of eight workshops designed to teach students about life beyond their school environment. During one workshop, Dr. Mack Davis, Director of First Generation Programs at the University of South Florida, discussed various issues, from choosing the right campus to differences in tuition between two-year and four-year institutions. Most importantly, he urged the students to follow their dreams and talked of several ways their goals may be accomplished.
Desiree was already familiar with the information presented in the workshop, but thought the presenters were motivating and uplifting nonetheless. She enjoys Bowers-Whitley's reading and writing programs and plans to attend a two-year college and then transfer to a university, majoring in criminal justice and minoring in psychology. Latisha commented that she gained useful information about financial aid and its various programs like work-study. Born in the Virgin Islands, Latisha enjoys cooking and has a passion for nursing. She plans to join the Army Nurse Corps after graduation.

Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament
Friday, April 6, 2012
Westshore Yacht Club
The Annual Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament will take place on April 6, 2012 at the Westshore Yacht Club. The Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament was started by two devoted corporate partners who understood the necessity of generating undesignated funds for the Foundation. Today, Larry Wilder of WILDERARCHITECTURE, INC. spearheads the event in partnership with Casey Weldon of Allstate Construction. They continue to add to the $250,000 already raised for the Foundation through this annual event. Each year, they host a Captain's dinner with key administrative Hillsborough County Public Schools personnel & participants the evening before the tournament. Participants receive dinner, a fishing shirt, hat and a cooler for their participation. At the tournament, each angler is treated to a McDonald's breakfast, boxed lunch, and a Westshore Yacht Club Awards dinner where photos document the biggest fish of the day for this "catch and release" tournament. The Foundation appreciates Larry's continued leadership of the event. If you are interested in sponsoring a boat or donating a drawing prize, contact Larry Wilder at 813-230-0190 or Cheryl Hedrick at 813-574-0273.
