December 2011 - Volume 10, Issue 11

Happy Holidays!
Please consider making a year-end gift during the holiday season.

Happy Holidays from the Hillsborough Education Foundation. As you celebrate with family and friends during this season of hope and joy, we hope that you will consider making a year-end gift to assist the students in Hillsborough County Public Schools whose future dreams are supported through our scholarship, mentoring and career programs. Perhaps you would like to make a donation in honor of a teacher who helped change your life? The Foundation supports and honors our teachers through classroom grants, our Teaching Tools store and teacher recognition programs. Donating to the Hillsborough Education Foundation allows us to continue supporting these valued teachers as they help today's students become tomorrow's leaders.

This newsletter features articles about various ways that you can give to the Foundation, but the simplest way is to click here and donate to our annual fund. This fund allows the Foundation to continue all of our work in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools. We are grateful for the many supporters who make valuable investments in the future of our community. Remember that gifts made by December 31 can generate deductions that could reduce your income tax bill. Through your continued generosity, we can keep our students, teachers and schools on the path to success.

Support the Building Excellence Campaign

We are in the final stage of Phase I of our Building Excellence campaign. The first phase has been funded with generous contributions combined with operating dollars that allowed us to move into the Centro Espaņol building. We have been fortunate to move in and work during the latter renovations without detracting from our services or programs.

Phase II, funding the restoration of the Grand Staircase, will begin depending upon grants from city, county, and state resources. We hope to someday be able to restore the staircase, entry and balcony doors. Even though we are in the building, we welcome your support to help us pay for the renovations so that we do not have to detract funds from operational support

Donors may make gifts and "name" areas of the building. We will continue our Horizon Society level of giving and acknowledge these $5,000 donors by "naming" a horizon window or an area of the Teaching Tools Supply Store. More information on this Centro Espaņol program is featured on our website. Please e-mail John Collins at jcollins@educationfoundation.com and he will send you an information packet.

Give the Gift of Health for the New Year

The Teaching Tools Supply Store is open year-round for teachers to pick up supplies for their classroom needs. Did you know the store also provides supplies to keep children active? The Healthy Kicks section of the store offers classroom equipment such as basketballs, jump ropes and hula hoops, along with personal care items.

We need your help to stock the Healthy Kicks section. Give students the gift of good health so they can succeed in the classroom:

  • $100 = 6 basketballs + 35 jump ropes + 8 hula hoops
  • $50 = 3 basketballs + 10 jump ropes + 4 hula hoops
  • $25 = 1 basketball + 5 jump ropes + 2 hula hoops
Your donations will keep kids active. You can also choose to write a message for students on your donations. A healthy body means a healthy mind!

Give Your Time and Talent

Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament
Friday, April 6, 2012
Westshore Yacht Club

The Annual Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament will take place on April 6, 2012 at the Westshore Yacht Club. The Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament was started by two devoted corporate partners who understood the necessity of generating undesignated funds for the Foundation. Today, Larry Wilder of WILDERARCHITECTURE, INC. spearheads the event in partnership with Casey Weldon of Allstate Construction. They continue to add to the $250,000 already raised for the Foundation through this annual event. Each year, they host a Captain's dinner with key administrative Hillsborough County Public Schools personnel & participants the evening before the tournament. Participants receive dinner, a fishing shirt, hat and a cooler for their participation. At the tournament, each angler is treated to a McDonald's breakfast, boxed lunch, and a Westshore Yacht Club Awards dinner where photos document the biggest fish of the day for this "catch and release" tournament. The Foundation appreciates Larry's continued leadership of the event. If you are interested in sponsoring a boat or donating a drawing prize, contact Larry Wilder at 813-230-0190 or Cheryl Hedrick at 813-574-0273.
