December Success Story

  Positive Behavior Support
Hunter's Green Elementary
Foundation Classroom Grant Recipient
2009-2010

Students at Hunter's Green Elementary showed remarkable results through the Positive Behavior Support Program, funded by a grant from the Foundation.  The school as a whole worked cohesively on this program.

Through the program, the school implemented a rewards system in which each student was awarded tickets (PAWS) if they exhibited good behavior.

Short term rewards for good behavior included anything from a homework pass to eating lunch with the principal.

As a strong reinforcement, the students could trade in the PAWS for activities such as field day, karaoke, and ice cream socials.

Note from the President

In the spirit of continuing collaboration, we've had a couple of very interesting meetings at our facility in the last couple of weeks.

On November 30th we co-hosted an Early Literacy Information Session with the United Way of Tampa Bay.  Providers of programming similar to Hillsborough Reads shared details of their programming, target populations, goals, and results.  This is the first gathering of this group; feedback was positive that participants valued what they learned and there is interest in continuing to work together.

On December 2nd we had a convening for Education Advocacy with the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations and the Florida Philanthropic Network (FPN) at the Foundation.  Education foundations and members of FPN shared what they are doing in their communities to engage, educate, and move to action on education issues.  We presented on our work around the Empowering Effective Teachers Initiative

It's been great to learn from what others are accomplishing while sharing what's happening at the Foundation.

Foundation hosts Florida CAN

The Florida College Access Network (FL CAN) held its first Local College Access Network Meeting for the Tampa area on December 16 at the Foundation.  This was a gathering of local providers who work on getting students prepared for post-secondary success - be it a college degree or technical certification.  FL CAN's mission is "to build a collaborating network of state and local entities to increase the quality and quantity of innovative and proven college preparation and access programs that serve limited-income, first generation students."

The Foundation presented information on its various programs which encourage and provide post-secondary access and success.  These are:

We look forward to continuing to collaborate with local providers and FL CAN to strengthen all of our programs, increase awareness, and provide services to even more students.
