November Success Story

  Ali
Florida Prepaid Scholarship recipient

Ali is a bright Middleton High student whose dedication to her education led her to apply for a Florida Prepaid Scholarship during the 2009-2010 school year.  She dreams of going to Notre Dame or entering the University of South Florida's Engineering program after graduation, both of which are possible with the help of her scholarship.  "It's the foundation for what I'm going to build my education on," she says, "I have something solid I know will be there for me if I keep my grades up.  It will help me get where I'm going."

Ali looks forward to the relationship she will build with her mentor and is interested in learning how she copes with the events of her life.  "It's always good to talk with someone about issues, school, and accomplishments," Ali says.

Note from the President

This is the season for Thanksgiving - and we give thanks for all our supporters who are committed to helping improve education in our community. The Saturday before Thanksgiving we had our annual "Thanks-for-giving" lunch at Centro to honor and thank our program volunteers (see the picture below). So many of our programs are only possible because of the generous volunteers who give their time - to work in the Teaching Tools store, to mentor a scholarship student, to help bring in resources so our programs can continue, work at an event, and on and on ...

Thanks-for-giving potluck 2010

We've said it before - we have a very giving community and there's nothing more valuable than the gift of time. We're thankful for that!

Volunteer

I currently donate my time to the Hillsborough Education Foundation through 2 channels. I'm involved with Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools as a committee member, and mentor through the Scholarship program.

I've enjoyed all of the experiences I've had through the Foundation. Each group that I am involved with offers its own rewards. Helping to raise money and supplies for the Teaching Tools Store feels good because it helps a large volume of teachers and students in the county. Working one on one with a student through the Mentor Program offers a different type of reward as I am hoping to help that student excel in school and reach his dreams.

The Foundation offers many different programs.  People are bound to find something that interests them enough to volunteer either time or money.  I think that most people also have an idea of the current educational and economic issues that Hillsborough County is dealing with, and just a little help can go a long way.

Planning for the future at Career & College Fest

On November 3 Hillsborough County 8th graders and their parents filled the Florida State Fairgrounds Special Event Center to get a taste of what opportunities lie ahead for their education and their futures.  The 2010 Career & College Fest introduced students to the college and technical education opportunities that are available after graduation.  Approximately 11,000 students and parents have attended this event since it began four years ago.

USF MBA students compete to improve Foundation marketing

On November 12 and 13 the Foundation had the significant opportunity to serve as the subject in this year's USF MBA Business Case Competition.  Students pursing an MBA degree traveled to Centro to learn about the Foundation and, within 24 hours, develop a strategic marketing plan for our organization.  Five teams used creative collaboration to plan different opportunities addressing organizational mission and transparency, and social media and web efforts.

The Foundation thanks the USF MBA course facilitators and students for their hard work.  We look forward to implementing the many strong suggestions throughout the coming year.
