October Success Story

Teaching Tools Supply Store shopper

I have been employed at schools where I could "shop" once a month at Teaching Tools for the past 6 years.  I want to thank the Hillsborough Education Foundation for sponsoring Teaching Tools, and express my thanks to all the donors over the years that keep the institution going and helping thousands of students every month across Hillsborough County.

My students - no matter which school or grade level - were always so excited when I shared with them the items I would get at the "free store."  Many times the items were for our classroom store, where students used money they earned in the classroom to buy items.  Things that many of my students did not have, I could provide through the donations.

Thank you so much for providing this valuable service to teachers, schools, and students.

Note from the President

Our Core issues typically highlight supporters and programs which they connect with.  We have hundreds of supporters and our programs wouldn't get the results they do without them. We also have a handful of people who are looking well into the future by leaving a legacy which will continue for decades.  These are our Heritage Society members and they're a very special group.  Please read about two of our members below.

Also, help us improve our newsletter, take our brief survey and help to shape future Core's.

One woman's past touches many futures

Victoria Periord

Heritage Society donor

Reminiscing on the past and paving a way for the future, Victoria Periord is opening doors for future generations.  Victoria is leaving a legacy through the Hillsborough Education Foundation's Heritage Society.

"Some kids go up to a certain level and they have to quit school because they have to go home to help their family to survive," she said.

Surviving is something she knows all too well. In Northern Italy, Victoria was a 10-year-old girl who loved to write, studied French and Italian, and was well educated. With only hope and a high school diploma, at 17 she was forced into the workforce to help provide for her family. She and her family traveled to Northern Africa to find work.  Even through sickness and hardships she had to provide.

Through several job transitions and recovering health, she finally landed a job in the United States working for an attorney and enrolling in newspaper and correspondence courses where her English was perfected.

"I regretted for years that I never had the opportunity to learn things like more literature," she said. "I had nobody that could teach me anything. I should have started when I was young."

She realizes the importance of a strong foundation in education. But she is also a product of an underprivileged environment. Helping others in the same predicament means something to her.

Endowments 101: One gift changing countless lives

Since 1998, 10 Hillsborough County students have received the promise of Prepaid Scholarship dollars after graduation thanks to one family, the Fuente Family.  Through their endowment, the Fuente Family has helped students attend such schools as Hillsborough Community College and Jacksonville University, turning their dreams of college into realities.

It's no secret, the costs of a college education are on the rise.  And with the recently approved Tuition Differential Fee, public universities in this state have the opportunity to increase tuition costs 15% each year until they reach the national average.  It is during times like these that donor endowments become the extra piece students need to complete their education.

With endowments, donor funds never go away.  These sustainable gifts award small amounts each year and continue to grow as long as the market remains stable.  With names and criteria decided upon by the donors, students can receive money for college or teachers and schools can receive grant funds for the classroom.  Through endowments, a single gift now can touch lives for years to come.

Find out how you can make the contribution that clears the path for countless students and teachers to come.
