September Success Story

Sand and Water Play
Anderson Elementary
Classroom Grant recipient

As a handful of kindergartners played freely in the sand box, they didn't know that they were also gaining cognitive and interpersonal relationship skills. Through the "Sand and Play" program, students learned to adapt socially and emotionally with a hands-on learning experience. The program's goal was to promote free exploration and independent learning initiatives through experimentation in the sand and water table.

To enhance the imagination, students were given a set of rules and instruction on how to play in the tables. They conducted investigations on what happened when water and sand mixed. While establishing relationships with peers, students also gained a level of responsibility and commanded their own level of learning.

"With this grant I am able to provide many hours of students learning through play for my current as well as future students," says Anderson teacher Ellen Heath.

Special Note on this Edition:

You may have noticed that this month's issue is coming out after the last Friday of the month, when you normally receive The Core. We just had to include the article and pictures from our Grand Opening (below) and couldn't wait till the end of October for the next issue.

Enjoy!!
Note from the President

You read more and more about the power of collaboration - partners coming together to work from their strengths with other organizations to produce even better results. As the new school year is beginning, we're pleased to be collaborating with a number of local non-profits on a new AmeriCorps program, Graduation Pathways. This is a result of one of the strategies developed last October at the Graduation Enhancement Symposium. We have been working with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Children's Board of Hillsborough County, Junior Achievement, SERVE and United Way to develop this program which is now being implemented at Leto High School and the feeder elementary and middle schools.

The goal of the program is to improve graduation success for students who have the greatest need for help. A variety of tactics will be used, with coaching and mentoring being key. To read more about this program, see the page on our website. We love the spirit of collaboration that has been apparent during this process and thank all those involved. We also look forward to some great results!!

Sheriff's Rising Stars Leadership Academy Scholarship

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department

The new Sheriff's Rising Stars (SRS) Leadership Academy Scholarship recently celebrated the graduation of its first class of recipients in June 2010.  The scholarship is limited to only those who successfully complete the SRS Leadership Academy, which is comprised of juniors from every public high school in Hillsborough County.  The academy is a week long leadership/team building experience held soon after the end of the school year.

Scholarship dollars are derived from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF), which is comprised of funds that are earmarked for educational and crime prevention efforts by law enforcement agencies.  The money is obtained through the court system as a result of seizures which occur during investigations and arrests made mainly as a result of the illegal drug trade.

The Sheriff feels it is important to reward higher achieving students who will most likely be the future leaders in our community.  A lot of the resources traditionally go towards at-risk students and this project, as we found out during its development, was something new for a law enforcement agency to undertake.

Grand Opening

Months of preparation and anticipation culminated on Monday, September 27 when the Foundation revealed its new home to the community at the Grand Opening Celebration.  Mayor Pam Iorio joined elected officials, board and committee members, and Foundation supporters to issue a proclamation and officially open the new facility.  Monday was Hillsborough Education Foundation Day in the City of Tampa.

Guests were invited to embark on self-guided tours to re-visit the building's rich history while learning more about the Foundation's programs.

The Foundation is excited to join the West Tampa community and have the opportunity to expand its programs to benefit more students in the county.  We welcome you to visit and see our new home for yourself.  Click here to contact the Foundation.

Community rallies again to give supplies to our students

More than 400 Foundation and community supporters filled the ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel at International Plaza on Thursday, September 2 for the 2010 Tools 4 Schools Breakfast.  Over breakfast they enjoyed listening to the experiences of the special guest teachers from Bing, Pride, and Ruskin Elementary Schools.

Through pledges and private donations, more than $110,000 was raised at this year's event for Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools.  Thank you to everyone who made a contribution at this special event!  With these dollars the Foundation will be able to continue to serve the disadvantaged students in the county and help give them the supplies they need to succeed in the classroom.

All About a Peer Evaluator

Sara Kay Bonti
Empowering Effective Teachers
 Peer Evaluator

For 22 years Sara has taught all levels of Language Arts classes, with seven of those years spent in Hillsborough County.  While she started her career outside of Hillsborough County Public Schools, she is a product of this school district, and the daughter of two Ballast Point Elementary, Wilson Middle, and Plant High School graduates.  "I have the unique perspective of appreciating the rewards of having a lifelong commitment to a community," she comments.

Over the course of her two- to three-year rotations, Sara will serve as a peer evaluator, collaborating with teachers to bring new insight to, and creating discussions based on observations in, the classroom.  "Each time I collaborate with other teachers at the school or district level, I am amazed at the talent level that exists in Hillsborough County classrooms," she says, "Being a peer evaluator is an opportunity to work directly with teachers to assist in reaching their own professional development goals and objectives, thereby enhancing the quality of instruction for children."

At the end of her rotations, Sara will return to her students in the classroom.  She is confident the experience she will have as a peer evaluator will enhance her own abilities as a teacher.

Thank you Tampa Bay for helping us Stuff the Bus!

The start of the Fall season marks the end of the Foundation's 2010 Stuff the Bus supply drive campaign.  During the months of July through September, more than 130 locations around Tampa Bay hosted a supply drive to benefit the Teaching Tools Supply Store.  With these donations we will be able to stock the shelves of the Supply Store well into the school year, and help thousands of Hillsborough County students receive the supplies they need for the classroom.

The Foundation extends a big thank you to all of the local businesses and organizations who participated in this year's drive.  Thank you for your efforts to make it a success!  Click here to see a list of all locations who participated.

Florida business leaders support Amendment 8

A recent survey by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations found that a majority of education foundation board members across Florida approve of Amendment 8, freezing the implementation of the Florida Class Size Amendment.  This initiative would use school averages to determine class size, rather than focusing on individual classrooms.  Eighty-three percent of members surveyed approve of the Amendment, and 17% oppose.

Also included in the survey were thoughts on how to address the cost of implementation of this Amendment, which could add $4 billion to the state's expenses in the next year.  Eighty-five percent of respondents did not know how it would be paid for, while 15% believed a state income tax or increased property taxes could offset the costs.

Thank you Amscot for the "Just a Dollar" campaign!

Amscot Financial recently wrapped the end of another very successful "Just a Dollar" campaign.  Through $1 donations at locations around the state, this campaign raised $106,807 for education foundations in Florida school districts.  A $10,000 match from Amscot brought the grand total for the 2010 campaign to $116,807.  These dollars will go towards supporting the education foundations in the counties Amscot serves.

Through the Foundation, Hillsborough County Public Schools will receive just over $31,000 for the students, teachers, and schools in the district.  We want to extend our deepest thanks to Amscot Financial for their continued support of public education in our area.

Thank you to our August supporters!
