August Success Story
Katherine
Junior, Bowers/Whitley Career Center
Project SUCCESS
I am in the Business and Multimedia Design program here at Bowers/Whitley. This program, along with my other classes, is helping me better myself. I am learning to make good choices and I have become a better person with lots of choices for my future.
I am not only happy here but I am proud of myself because last semester I made honor roll on my report card! I had never in my life been even close to that level. I thought that I was not that smart for that, but my teachers are helping me realize that I am smart. Now I realize the importance of putting forth my very best effort so that I can earn good grades and work towards a successful future.
I am so gracious that this school offers college opportunities through the help of the Hillsborough Education Foundation and others. It is a dream of mine to attend college and, with your help, this dream will become a reality. I hope to someday become a Physical Therapist. Thank you for helping to open doors for me to have a better future. Click here to read more about the Project SUCCESS program and the students it benefits. |

Note from the President
Another school year has begun!! Teachers have been busy getting ready (the Teaching Tools program has had many new teachers visit to shop) for their new arrivals. There's something special about starting a new school year and this one even more so. Students returned Tuesday to the first year of changes started with the Empowering Effective Teachers Initiative.
And to add another level of excitement, on Tuesday it was announced that Florida is one of the states to receive a second round grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education Race to the Top program (see US DOE announcement here). Florida will receive $700M (see the FL DoE page on Race to the Top for information). This award is an affirmation of the hard work and collaboration of all those who worked to improve on the state's first round application. Congratulations to all. |

Foundation Spotlight

National Association of Women in Construction
Tampa Chapter
One of the objectives of both the Tampa Chapter, as well as our National organization, is to promote education in construction and to contribute to the betterment of the construction industry. NAWIC encourages women to pursue and establish their careers in the construction industry; our contributions and scholarships support both men and women. NAWIC strongly supports the Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF), as HEF allows our organization to enhance our reach to our target recipients, particularly within technical schools, allowing us to support a more diverse span of construction-related educational institutions. This will be the third year of supporting HEF, and specifically the INVEST Program. We are pleased that our contributions can be specified to support students in construction-related tracks. Another big plus that we like is the possibility of matching funds from other sources that can further leverage our investment.
Providing scholarships to our local community is one of the most rewarding and highest priorities for our Chapter. Tampa NAWIC views scholarships as a way to further develop potential workers, business owners, etc. for the construction industry within our local community and for the construction industry as a whole.

It's all about the personal touch for Project SUCCESS
The financial contributions provided by donors of the Foundation's Project SUCCESS program enable students, who might otherwise not finish school, to develop skills to start a trade and possibly continue on to college. As encouraging as these dollars are, something that has an even more lasting effect on these students is the donor.
By interacting with the students at the career centers, donors can show them how much their hard work is valued and recognized. In the spring of 2010 the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay held its quarterly board meeting at the South County Career Center. Students in the school's culinary department served lunch during the meeting, and had the invaluable opportunity to meet influential individuals in Tampa Bay.
The Suncoast for Kids Foundation, made possible by Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, brought a videographer to D.W. Waters Career Center to film student testimonials which were later posted on the Credit Union's website. They also personally teach students the value of financial literacy through a student-run credit union branch at the school. Representatives from Suncoast for Kids and the Eckerd Family Foundations make a point to attend annual graduation ceremonies and encourage the students to keep in touch as they move on in their education.
The impact of these small acts on the students is extraordinary. Knowing others care and want them to succeed provides the motivation and confidence they need to keep going towards a bright future.

A student's perspective: Project SUCCESS
Joseph
Senior, Business and Multimedia Design
Bowers/Whitley Career Center
With the donated funds and scholarships for the students of Bowers/Whitley Career Center, our futures will likely be more successful because of the chance to attend college.
Bowers/Whitley has helped me with my life, which is so important to me! In my past school years, I was lazy and unmotivated. I don't really know why I was that way, but this school has brought me out and helped me become a better student and a better person. This very special school made me realize that without education, it is so difficult to make it in life. My previous schools didn't help me believe in myself. I never really felt like I could make something of myself and have a good future. But now I actually feel that I can make it in life and actually "be someone" who is successful.
I am really looking forward to continuing my education in college. I never thought that was even possible! I hope to begin my college studies at HCC in an effort to reach my career goals and maybe even someday work for the FBI.

Buccaneers rally fans to help our students
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have teamed up with Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools to put basic school supplies in the hands of Hillsborough County's disadvantaged students. At the September 12 home opener against the Cleveland Browns, fans can drop off school supplies at any of the six entrance points into the stadium. Just look for the large tents and collection bins at the gate. All supplies will go to the Teaching Tools Supply Store. If you or any Bucs fans you know are heading to the first game of the season, bring along some of the following highly sought after items:
1. Paper (lined or unlined)
2. Composition books
3. Scissors
4. Pencils
5. Crayons
Any amount of supplies, large or small, will go a long way for our students. If every fan brought a box of pencils, think how many students could write down their dreams for the future! Collection bins will only be available until the start of the first quarter, so be sure to arrive early with your donations.
The Foundation thanks not only the Bucs for this partnership, but Metro Courier Services, Inc. as well. They have volunteered their time and trucks to ensure all supplies donated at the stadium are delivered directly to the Supply Store warehouse. Thank you to both of these organizations for working to provide supplies for those students who need our help.

New year brings new opportunities for mentors
Having a mentor gave me the sight to see and appreciate the different opportunities I have in my life to become successful. My mentor keeps me on the right tracks and shows me the right way of doing things by his experience. ~ Kendall
For just one hour each week, caring individuals are changing the lives of students in Hillsborough County by serving as a mentor. The time these mentors are spending with their student is having a lasting impact both on the child and the adult. A mentor's guidance can help the student stay on track in class, think about the possibilities for the future, and solve those impossible problems all teenagers face. Studies show that under the guidance of a mentor, students have a better attitude towards school which leads to higher attendance rates, and are more likely to pursue higher education.
Students who receive a Foundation Florida Prepaid Scholarship are paired with mentors who are willing to provide guidance, support, and encouragement throughout the school year. As more students receive these scholarships, more mentors are needed to give them the rich experience they deserve. Currently, we still have students who are waiting for a mentor. Responsible adults who can spend their time making a difference for these students can volunteer to be a mentor. For just one hour each week, you can help a student find the confidence and determination to become the best person they can be.

Giving young readers a fresh start
The Hillsborough Reads program had another successful year, helping even more struggling readers find a love for reading. Students at Cahoon, Citrus Park, Cleveland, Crestwood, Foster, Kimbell, Mort, MOSI, Patel, Pizzo, Shaw, Tampa Bay Blvd, and Wimauma Elementary schools received more than 14,000 hours of one-on-one tutoring to improve their reading levels. Before tutoring, 52% of students were profoundly below their reading level. In just one year, 43% of participating students are reading on grade level or higher, and 81% of students raised their reading grade two or more levels.
These results would not be possible without the talents of the dedicated tutors. The impact of these individuals is inspiring:
"[Our tutor's] one-on-one work with our struggling readers has improved literacy and given them the extra encouragement needed to move on to the next level. We have been delighted with the results of the Americorps Hillsborough Reads program this year and in the past. The support of the Hillsborough Education Foundation has helped ensure that ALL students have the opportunity to excel and become productive citizens."
Georgette Johnson
Assistant Principal, Cleveland Elementary School
If you have a passion for reading you could help impact a student's present and his/her future. To learn more about the Hillsborough Reads program and how you can become involved, click here. |
