Math Mastery
Lutz Elementary
Classroom Grant recipient

During the 2009-2010 school year, third grade students at Lutz Elementary participated in the Math Mastery program, improving their understanding and abilities in many mathematical concepts.

Lesson plans used geo-boards and K'nex to create models of two- and three-dimensional shapes and help identify edges, faces, and vertices.  Multiplication wrap-ups, dominoes, and digitz multiplication games gave students the opportunity to practice their multiplication skills.

"Since many of the materials were in a game format, it made learning fun for the students and motivated them to practice more," commented teacher Tara Young, "I have already loaned them to several other teachers to use in their classrooms as well.  Countless students have and will benefit from these materials."

Note from the President

Teachers have been in the news quite a bit lately and even more so with the Empowering Effective Teachers Initiative in Hillsborough.  This is a good thing since an effective teacher with the right tools and support can do wonders with students ... literally changing lives.  At the Hillsborough Education Foundation we recognize that there is a need for the community to support teachers and there are many ways that can happen.  Below you can read about our grants program, which has been helping teachers for more than 20 years.

And, of course, Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools exists to help teachers as well as their students.  As we move into our new store, we have started a webisode series called Conversations with a Teacher.  Listen to what teachers think of the program, in their own words.  Then check back each week to see another installment in the series.

It's time to Stuff the Bus for our students!

In a few short weeks Hillsborough County students will be going back to school!  From now through September 1, you can help ensure students have the essential supplies to succeed in the classroom.  Tell your family, friends, businesses, and clubs and organizations that they can help at-risk students start the year off right!

Join the numerous Tampa Bay businesses that are already a part of the 2010 Stuff the Bus campaign!  You can also stop by the following Downtown Tampa locations to drop off your personal contributions: 100 North Tampa, M&I Bank Plaza, Rivergate Tower, and Wachovia Center.

All supplies benefit the Foundation's Teaching Tools for Hillsborough Schools program.  For more information and to schedule a supply drive, contact Laura Grucza at (813) 574-0279.

Desoto Elementary teachers shop for their students

Janice Hodge, 2nd grade
Teresa McAuliffe, 5th grade

Janice Hodge and Teresa McAuliffe have been a part of the Desoto Elementary family for the entirety of their careers in Hillsborough County Public Schools, five years and two years respectively.  It is one of the smaller schools in the county, but it's filled with a lot of heart and a sense of family.  "The kids know your name, and you at least know them by face," comments Janice.

With this family-environment comes the strong need for and desire by the teachers to help their students in-need.  "Most of the students did not bring in supplies last year, and that's fine.  I set out supplies and give them on an as-needed basis," explains Teresa, "All of our kids sit in groups so there's a supply box in the center of their table with their markers, crayons, pencils, everything they need on a daily basis."

A new year brings new teachers

With the start of school this fall, Hillsborough County Public Schools will welcome 650 new teachers to the district.  To help ease their transition into our schools, Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Foundation hosted the annual New Teacher Orientation, a three-day event offering trainings in curriculum, classroom management, and instructional strategies.  Community businesses and organizations were also represented to introduce these new teachers to the services available to them in Hillsborough County.

We would like to thank those who participated in this year's orientation, including:

Encouraging budding scientists

For nine weeks Maniscalco Elementary fifth graders participated in the "On the Boardwalk at Maniscalco" project, studying the wetlands located directly behind the school.  The students tested and analyzed the water quality and counted the different numbers of species living in the wetlands.  Using their findings, they designed, wrote, and taught mini-lessons on the water cycle and water pollution to all six of the school's kindergarten classes.

Before studies began, the fifth graders took a pre-test addressing many of the topics they would cover in the project, and averaged 70.9% as a class.  Through their hard work during the nine weeks of studies, they average 77.1% on their post-project exam.  The students also had the chance to serve as teachers one more time; writing, editing, and grading the pre- and post-tests they gave to their kindergarten pupils.

"My students gained so much from their involvement with these activities.  They became active, contributing scientists," says Maniscalco teacher Christine Leacock, "They increased their knowledge of many environmental issues and developed plans to address these issues by teaching younger students.  They realized that they had a voice and they chose to use their voice for the environment."

Teachers improve learning through special funding

No one understands the needs of our students better than the teachers and principals who see them each day during the school year.  Their dedication to these children cause them to constantly develop creative ways to teach their lessons and operate their school sites.  However, sometimes these new ideas require funding that simply is not there.

The Foundation's grant programs received more than 1,100 applications for the 2009-2010 school year.  Of these applications, 145 awards were made, totaling just over $339,000.  The selected projects covered a wide variety of curriculum, including: science experiments, math training, literacy, geography, and the arts.  Some provided technology resources such as camcorders and iPods to enhance learning.

"Each year we will continue to use the books purchased from these grant funds to foster a love of reading and to improve important social skills," says a grant recipient from Lutz Elementary, "I've seen even reluctant readers begin to take an interest in reading and responding to literature."

As the 2010-2011 school year approaches, teachers and principals have begun the planning stages for the coming year.  From this planning, many more innovative concepts and projects will undoubtedly be born.  It is only through community support that the Foundation can work to fund these bright ideas.  Click here to learn more about the grant programs available and how you can help more teachers broaden the minds of their students in the coming year.

Hot off the presses: the 2010 Voter's Guide!

Voter's GuideThere are many factors that go into ensuring our students receive the best education possible.  The Foundation believes strongly that assuring the highest quality education in our public schools is a collaborative effort.  The public can participate in this effort in many ways, including selecting the School Board members who lead the school district.

To help voters prepare for this fall's election, we have developed, in conjunction with The Tampa Tribune - News In Education, the 2010 Voter's Guide to candidates for the School Board.  In this guide you will find background information on the candidates, as well as their position on important issues within Hillsborough County Public Schools.  The guide will appear in the August 10 edition of the Tampa Tribune.  You can pick up your copy, and visit us online for a digital copy as well as more information.  We hope you will find this guide useful in helping you with the voting process.  Don't forget to visit the polls for early voting August 9 - 21, or on August 24 for the general election for school board positions.

Thank you to our June supporters!
