June Success Story

Valeria
Florida Prepaid Scholarship Recipient

Valeria and her family left their home in Peru and came to the United States nearly nine years

ago.  For 8-year-old Valeria, the transition was a difficult one.  "It was very lonely," Valeria recalls. "The only word I knew how to say in English was 'folder.' The adjustment wasn't easy."

Education became her

solace.  Her hard work soon paid off: As a freshman at Middleton, Valeria won a Kimmins Contracting Corporation

Florida Prepaid Scholarship from the Foundation.

"When people talk about the American dream, I think of it as doing what you're passionate

about," Valeria says. "I don't let hardships get in the way of what I believe in.  Whenever something

happens to you, you have the power to choose whether it's going to break you or you're going to learn from it. My life

circumstances are building my character, but my education is

building my future."

Note from the President

Our move is complete and we're settling into our new address.  There are still boxes to unpack and the Teaching Tools store to organize, but we're excited about the possibility the new location offers.  We have a larger area in the store for supplies for the teachers, with the school district's help we have more warehouse space (combining what we have on site with a district warehouse within a few blocks), and we have a much greater proximity to the teachers and students we serve in our programs.  Our proximity to the interstate and so many more Title I schools will allow us to grow our programs over the coming years.  Summer shopping will begin July 7th.

We have had a number of groups already reserve space in our Community Room.  We look forward to the people who will learn about our programs while attending meetings and functions at Centro Espaņol.  An open house is planned for the fall, but if you're in the area, stop by and we'll show you around!

 Helios Education Foundation

Helios Education Foundation is excited to partner with the Hillsborough Education Foundation and Hillsborough County Public Schools on the Transitional Success through STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Academies project in Hillsborough County. This initiative is taking the career academies model and building a relevant, unified program between middle school and high school that connects classroom learning with the real world.

We've made a $431,400 investment in this program which will benefit 15,000 students ages 11 through 18. These students are enrolled at five middle school STEM career institutes, which will feed five high school STEM career academies.

We're also pleased to support one of the Hillsborough Education Foundation's newest programs, the SUCCESS Fund. This program helps students with the funds needed for specialized tools, regional competitions and student professional groups associated with enrollment in career academies.

We look forward to working with the Hillsborough Education Foundation, and we invite you to learn more about Helios by visiting us online.
Welcome to the new Teaching Tools Supply Store!

A new home at Centro Espaņol also means a brand new space to house the Foundation's Teaching Tools Supply Store.  The first floor of the new building will be devoted to this program, providing a spacious and bright area for teachers to come for their monthly shopping trips.  The new layout will also bring the creation of six new shopping areas.  Among them are: Backpack Basics, Literacy Oasis, and Teachers' Treasures.

Shopping will resume on July 7 and teachers will be able to come shop for supplies for their classrooms on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.  To date the program has helped more than 1,800 teachers provide supplies for their students.  Now that the store is in a more central location, we look forward to welcoming even more teachers in the 2010-2011 school year.

Empowering Effective Teachers: Mentors

Teacher photoWhen the new school year starts in the fall, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) will launch a groundbreaking new system for evaluating and supporting teachers. More than 100 peers and mentors will greet students and teachers, and work with them throughout the year.

Jody Woods is a physical education teacher at Smith Middle School and has been a teacher for 14 years. She said that in her role as a peer evaluator, she will be able to broaden her horizons and impact many more teachers and students.  "This program has the potential to be so beneficial to all of us," said Woods. "I'll be able to witness and impact teaching across disciplines and provide my perspective. I can't wait."

Intensive training will begin for peers and mentors in June and continue through the summer. One of their tasks will be to learn how to fairly and consistently use HCPS' new teacher evaluation tool, which has been developed in collaboration with renowned education consultant Charlotte Danielson.

"Being a teacher requires a real talent," observed Jean Clements, president of the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, which has been working collaboratively with HCPS on the Empowering Effective Teachers initiative since its inception. "What happens in a classroom cannot be scripted, yet there are factors and qualities that define an effective teacher. This first group of peers and mentors is embarking on a historic journey to help identify and replicate these factors. It is a journey that will change the lives of children in Hillsborough County forever."

The Foundation is honored to serve as fiscal agent in this process.  We are appreciative of the confidence from the school district and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in our ability to serve in this compacity.  We fully support the district in their efforts to implement an initiative that will directly benefit our teachers and students.
