Greetings!

Thanks to those who were able to make our meeting on May 3rd.  We know schedules are busy, so for those who were not able to, here is a review of the meeting.  [Link here]  We got excellent feedback to the questions posed to the group.  If you've had further thoughts you'd like to share, or were not at the meeting, but would like to share some ideas, please email me and we'll incorporate that feedback. We all know the heated debate around SB 6 and Gov. Crist's veto of the legislation.  The discussion continues; below you can read about the State Board of Education's meeting on Tuesday where strategies moving forward were discussed.

Hillsborough School Board get first look Monday at new teacher evaluation spurred by Gates grant
Last week, members of the Hillsborough County School Board got their first look at the evaluation system they hope will revolutionize the way teachers are hired and set a new nationwide standard.  The system will be used to rate every teacher and principal as part of the district's $202 million partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation..  Read the article ...

Under a new system beginning this fall, student learning gains account for 40 percent of the annual evaluation of most of Hillsborough County's 13,000 public school teachers.  But what about special needs students? Class size, teachers top state agenda
The Florida Board of Education tread close to the job of legislators during a discussion Tuesday morning about the failed teacher reform bill known as Senate Bill 6.  The board also pushed the envelope on another issue during its regular meeting Tuesday, held in Tampa, by discussing whether it can take on an advocacy role by pushing voters to pass a class-size amendment in the fall.   Read the article ...
