May Success Story

Steven
Prepaid Scholarship recipient, 2010 graduate

I received my scholarship from the Hillsborough Education Foundation and Lazydays only about two or three years ago, when I just a sophomore in high school. I remember at the time I had dreams to be a doctor. I wanted to surpass myself and reach my goals. I wanted to go on to college and get a degree so I could be functional in a world that was increasingly getting more difficult.

One of my counselors, Mrs. Aplin, called me up to fill out a form for the Hillsborough Education Foundation. Soon enough, I received a letter in the mail saying I won a scholarship.  Mrs. Aplin told me I had to choose a mentor. They had suggested Mr. Marcus, my creative writing teacher.  Mr. Marcus has proved to be more than just a mentor to me. He's been a friend, an adviser, a guardian even. My sophomore year he asked if I wanted to be a part of the school newspaper. I was a bit wary about it; but it was the most enriching experience I had at Chamberlain. Soon, I learned that taking care of patients and marrying myself to a hospital was not my vocation. It was writing. I began to love journalism and what it meant to the world. Being able to spread the truth and inform people was attractive to me. I can thank Mr. Marcus for letting me discover it.

Note from the President

Time is flying by.  It seems the school year just began and already the class of 2010 is preparing to "walk".  Each school year seems to be more exciting than the last and that's even more the case this year.  The partnership of Hillsborough County Public Schools, the School Board, and the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association marked a successful collaboration by obtaining a $100M grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Work has started on this initiative by a wide group of constituencies.  The Hillsborough Education Foundation is pleased to be a part of this historic initiative which is only just beginning.

Our community continues to show the high level of support for the students, teachers and schools of our county by providing over 300 youngsters with college scholarships valued at more than $800,000!  The Teaching Tools resource store has provided more than $1.4M in free supplies for teachers to give to their students and use in their classroom.  We continue to hear from students and teachers about how their efforts are made a little easier due to the support the Hillsborough Education Foundation has provided through the generosity of the community.

And to top it all off, as the school year comes to a close, the Hillsborough Education Foundation is gearing up to move all of our programs and staff to a new location.  As of June 14 our new home will be:

2306 N. Howard Ave.

Tampa, FL  33607

(813) 574-0260

This is the Centro Espaņol de West Tampa building, provided by the City of Tampa.  We're excited about the move which will provide the ability for us to grow our programs and serve even more students and teachers in the next school year and beyond.

Business partnerships help students

Honoring Hillsborough's exceptional scholars

A record-breaking scholarship season officially came to a close on May 22 when the Foundation hosted the 2010 Scholarship Reception.  This event brought together the generous contributors to the Scholarship program and more than 300 bright students who were selected as recipients of a scholarship award.

Before receiving their scholarship medals, students and their families heard inspirational words by Ernest Hooper, columnist for the St. Petersburg Times, Harold Oehler, General Counsel for the Lazydays Employee Foundation, and Steve Kolvekorn, President of the Citi Center Tampa Campus.  Student recipient Steven Arce also spoke about how his Florida Prepaid Scholarship helped lead him on a path towards pursuing a law degree from the University of Florida.

Thank you to Presenting Sponsor Citi for your generous contributions towards this year's reception.

Apple Appeal roars through another year

The return of the Apple Appeal - Starlight Safari brought more fun and adventure for guests as they contributed to the enhancement of education in Hillsborough County.  This year's event featured many popular elements returning guests remembered, such as pictures with Busch Gardens wildlife and giraffe feedings during the nighttime safari.  Fantastic items and packages were up for bid in the silent auction, including an exciting live auction for an afternoon aboard a premier yacht.

Thanks to the generosity of Host Sponsor Busch Gardens of Tampa Bay, all ticket and auction proceeds went to the Foundation.  We are pleased to announce this year's event raised more than $100,000 for the Foundation!
