Mentee Graduating

Mentor

 UPDATE

Greetings!
How Am I Doing?
Kid for mentor updateDo you ever ask yourself this question?  Sometimes on a day-to-day or week-by-week basis it is not easy to determine if the time you are spending with your mentee is truly making a positive impact.

Below are some points upon which you may wish to reflect as you review this year's mentoring experience.  These questions are provided through the courtesy of The Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, Business Guide to Youth Mentoring.  Adapted from What's Working? Tools for Evaluating your Mentoring Program, Search Institute, 2001.

As you read over these points, recall those interactions that occurred between you and your mentee and the resulting positive influence each of you has experienced.

Let us know if this exercise was helpful.

Because of our relationship, I think my mentee . . .

Support:

·        Feels that there are more adults who care about him or her

·        Feels that there are more people who will help him or her

Empowerment:

·        Feels he or she has more future options

·        Believes he or she is a better leader

Boundaries and Expectations:

·        Feels others see him or her as more responsible

·        Has higher expectations of him- or herself

Constructive Use of Time:

·        Has more interests and hobbies

·        Is involved in more youth programs or activities (such as sports, music, religious)

Commitment to Learning:

·        Has a better attitude toward school

·        Has better grades and test scores

·        Comes to school better prepared (such as having homework done)

·        Has better classroom behavior (such as paying attention and not being disruptive)

Positive Values

·        Thinks it's important to help others

·        Is more honest

Social Competencies

·        Is better able to resist using alcohol and other drugs

·        Is better able to express his or her feelings

·        Gets along better with his or her family

·        Gets along better with others (such as friends, teachers)

 Positive Identity

·        Has a more positive view of his or her future

·        Feels more sure of him- or herself

·        Thinks he or she is a better person

What do you think your mentee has gained or learned from your relationship?

What have you gained or learned through your relationship?

Has your relationship changed your attitudes, values and understanding of young people today and the realities facing them? If so, in what ways?

What is easy about having a mentee? What worked well?

Step 3: Help Your Mentee Find the Right Fit

There are more than 4,000 postsecondary institutions in the United States, including four and two-year colleges and universities, community colleges and vocational schools. The challenge for you and your students is to find the institution that best matches his or her talents, interests and personality?

  • Is it a big or small school?
  • Is it near home or far away?
  • Does it offer the program of study your student is thinking about pursuing?

Low-income students and those who are the first in their families to pursue college often have a difficult time picturing themselves on campus. KnowHow2GO-U helps students overcome that barrier by inviting them to explore buildings commonly found on college campuses-on their own time and at their own pace.

Go to www.KnowHow2GO.org and, on the homepage, click on the link that says "KnowHow2GO University-Take the Tour." This virtual tour will allow you and your mentee to explore a college campus and become familiar with available resources.
