April Success Story
Ahrecia
Student, Bowers/Whitley Career Center
As a high school student, I am very thankful for the donations that were given to our school from the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
Ever since I started coming to the Bowers/Whitley Career Center, I have learned so many new and different things that I never knew before. I am in the career program called Business and Multimedia Design. In this program I am learning not only business skills, but social and other work-related skills.
Not only am I learning new things to better myself and my future, but I also go home and teach new things to my mother, brother, and cousins. I feel real happy and excited when my mother calls me to help her with her new document or something that is related to my business career. She says that she is so proud of me for learning all these new things.
I have really improved and am looking forward to attending HCC when I graduate from Bowers/Whitley.

Note from the President
It's been said many times in many ways that educating our youth is a community's responsibility. We're blessed in this community that we have so many folks who actively give their time to help our students, teachers and schools. During Volunteer Appreciation Month, we want to give a "shout out" to the, literally, hundreds of volunteers who tutor students, mentor scholarship recipients, make Teaching Tools run smoothly, help with various events, serve in the Ambassador program, and sit on committees and the board every year. It's heartening to see so many that are willing to give so much time - we're talking thousands and thousands of volunteer hours targeted to meaningful programs. We appreciate it!! |

Foundation Spotlight
Larry Wilder
Wilder Architecture
Jim Inman and I started the Hooked on Education Fishing Tournament 5 years ago as we thought it would be a fun way to support the Hillsborough Education Foundation. The Tournament allows us to help raise needed funds for the Foundation and as a bonus, have a great day of fishing. We both attended Hillsborough Public Schools and our kids are all products of the School District. We also have enjoyed designing and constructing local schools, so partnering with the Foundation was an obvious choice. At Wilder Architecture we feel it is important to give back to our community and the Tournament has been a successful way to help us accomplish this goal. We organized the first one with the help of a great committee and within 60 days successfully held the first tournament which raised $48,500. The tournaments have always focused primarily on and relied on the support of members of the construction industry. Even in a down economy we are proud to say our sponsors came through once again this year enabling us to raise $75,000. In the past 5 years the Tournament has raised more than $400,000 total for the Foundation. We look forward to future tournaments and offer thanks to our many sponsors and committee members for their support. |

A Conversation with Teaching Tools Volunteers
Sharon & Hal Hogan
If you were to visit the Teaching Tools Supply Store on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, you would meet Sharon and Hal Hogan. Sharon, a retired teacher, was already familiar with the program from her extensive career with the county's Title I schools. Before the program, Sharon and Hal were spending almost $1500 every year on supplies for her classroom. "When we'd buy things for my classroom, I'd slip them in with the grocery money," she recalls. Now Sharon values the time she is able to spend giving back to the program that helped her and her students so much. "Teaching Tools was here when I needed it when I was a teacher. So now I'm on the other side of the table and I'm giving back, and I think that's important. And it's even better because now my husband comes to volunteer." As a teacher's husband, Hal has been involved in education for years, even though he never had a classroom of his own. Even without a personal connection to the field, he finds his time at the store equally rewarding. "I enjoy it tremendously," he says, "All the people that come here are always so happy, so grateful that it's available to them." Being retired, they know they can be picky with how they spend their time. And they make a point to only volunteer at places that make them happy. "If this wasn't fun," says Hal, "I wouldn't be doing it". The store volunteers and shoppers enjoy having Sharon and Hal around just as much as they enjoy being there. The couple has become notorious for their collection of holiday hats. "People who come here have been working all day and they're physically drained," explains Sharon, "If we can make them smile, that helps. It's gotten to the point now where if there is a holiday when we don't wear hats, they ask why." Hal adds, "It's expected now, and I take great pride in that." Focus on an Americorps Volunteer
Ashley Wachter
SERVE, Americorps Volunteer
As an Americorps volunteer, Ashley Wachter has worked with the county's SERVE program for almost two years to improve literacy in our schools. When she started she knew she wanted to help the school district, so she took on the role of recruiting and training volunteers to serve as tutors to struggling readers in our county's schools. "I enjoy inspiring people to do good so we can strengthen our community," says Wachter. In her work Ashley conducts three types of trainings, two of which are: for volunteer tutors to work with the Foundation's Hillsborough Reads literacy program, and for third and fourth grade students to serve as reading buddies for first- and second-graders. To inspire volunteer tutors, Ashley emphasizes what a big difference a little time and effort can make. By giving small amounts of their time, these tutors will help students make tremendous strides in their reading skills. One of the most encouraging aspects of Ashley's role is her work with school children who will become tutors for their younger peers. "[This program] encourages 3rd and 4th graders to be role models to their younger fellow students. We train the students not to make fun of their buddy if they make a mistake when reading. So they are practicing their behavior skills, while practicing their reading." To learn more about the Americorps program, Hillsborough Reads, and literacy in our schools, click here. |
