Greetings!

This is the second of our updates on the Empowering Effective Teachers initiative of the Hillsborough County Public Schools.  Progress continues at the school district and is being regularly reported on in the press.  We'll be sharing links to articles in the "Staying Connected" section of the update (below).  If you come across resources, please forward those to us.

Here's a resource that Community Engagement Group (CEG) member Jim Fortson shared with us.  I think you'll find it a nice perspective on what makes for a great teacher from The Atlantic.

What Makes a Great Teacher?

For years, the secrets to great teaching have seemed more like alchemy than science, a mix of motivational mumbo jumbo and misty-eyed tales of inspiration and dedication. Here are recent media hits around developments in the EET initiative:

Hillsborough teachers will soon be rated by their peers
Starting as early as this fall, every Hillsborough County school teacher will be subject to ratings by his or her peers.  The School Board on Tuesday unanimously approved the move as part of a reform effort under way to improve schools through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  Read the article ...

Schools defend spending of Gates grant money
Hillsborough County School Board member April Griffin says she can't go to the grocery store or walk the dog without hearing the question:  "How are you spending the Gates money?"  It's the same for board members Jack Lamb and Carol Kurdell, who reply: "Wisely."  Read the article ...

We'll be setting the next meeting of the CEG group for mid-May.  Be looking for an email on that in the next month.  If at any time you don't wish to be included in the email updates or the meetings, please let us know.

And thanks again for your interest!
Sincerely,

Bill
